  1. Safety and First Aid • Accident Prevention • Follow safety rules • Prevent: Falls, Poisonings,Electric Shock, Fires, • How to act toward strangers • Internet safety

  2. Safety/First Aid • Safety – preventing possible injury in an environment(surroundings) • Age groups: • Young children • Senior Citizens • People with Disabilities

  3. Stroke: • a blockage or opening in the blood vessels in the area of the brain causing a lack of oxygen or nutrients to the brain • 4 questions to ask a person possibly having a stroke: • FAST • Face: Ask them to smile • Arms: Ask them to raise both hands above the shoulders • Sentence: Ask them to say a complete sentence • Tongue: Ask them to stick out their tongue…it may roll

  4. What to do in place of stroke • If you recognize the person can’t do some or all of the test: • Call 911 • Tell them your address • Tell them you are concerned about a stroke • Tell them what you did-they will help you.

  5. Prevent Falls • Keep floors clean and dry (friction) • Use non-skid mats in showers, tubs,and bathroom floors • Use only sturdy ladders for high reaches • Keep stairways and hallways brightly lit • Keep stairways free of clutter • Keep electrical cords away from doors and hallways

  6. Prevent Falls • Fasten rugs and carpeting securely to floor • Keep outdoor walks and stairs free of ice and snow

  7. Prevent Electric Shock • Do not touch metal prongs of a plug when inserting it into an outlet • Do not plug too many appliances into the same outlet • Use safety plugs to cover unused outlets • Do not allow electrical appliances to get near water or use them when you are wet – GFCI – Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter

  9. Prevent Electric Shock • Do not use the appliance if the electrical cord is damaged • Tell an adult if you see a damaged cord, wire, or electrical appliance

  11. Poisonings • Read labels carefully before using medicines and household products • Store medicines and household products out of reach of young children • Check dates of medicines and dispose of any outdated • Properly dispose of empty containers that have held poisons and medicines

  12. Safety Rules to Prevent Fires • Install Smoke detectors-check batteries • Handle matches carefully • Dispose of used matches properly • Keep matches and other fire sources away from young children • Keep flammable materials away from heat sources

  13. Prevent Fires • Properly dispose of flammable materials such as newspapers, cardboard, boxes and old rags • Maintain electrical wiringreplacingdamaged cords, cracked plugs and loose connections • Never overload an outlet • Never leave space heaters unattended

Safety Rules of Acting Toward Strangers • When someone knocks at the door or rings the bell, look through a window or peep hole to identify the person • Never open the door to a stranger • Do not let the stranger know you are home alone • If you are concerned they may try to enter your house, call 911 • Have an emergency phone number of a neighbor • Have an emergency phone number for a parent • Enter ICE in your phone contacts; In Case of Emergency: emergency phone number-parent

  15. Safety Rules of Acting Toward Strangers • Motorists: If they ask you for directions, keep several feet away from the car….tell them to ask an adult • Neverenter a stranger’s car • Anyone wearing a uniform should have a company vehicle …concerns call the company

  16. Internet • Facebook • Password- keep private • Permanent file – anything emailed is a permanent file on the server • Cyberbullying – Cyberbullying

  17. What is cyberbullying? • Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person.

  18. What to do • Tell someone –parent,counselor, teacher • Walk away- step away from computer or turn off phone • Resist the urge to retaliate or respond-save the message or text for proof • Report bullying to service provider • Block the bully • Be safe online-password protect cell and online sites-change password often
