  1. Getting Excited About Giving ThanksPsalm 100 • Happy Thanksgiving! • The dangers of affluence. • Deuteronomy 8:11–14 [NIV] - Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God.

  2. Psalm 100 • A psalm. For giving thanks. • 1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. • 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; • come before him with joyful songs. • 3 Know that the Lord is God. • It is he who made us, and we are his; • we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

  3. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving • and his courts with praise; • give thanks to him and praise his name. • 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

  4. What excites you? Do you get excited about your relationship with God?

  5. The purpose for Psalm 100: • “For Giving Thanks” • We are called to be THANKFUL people. • The Manner For Giving Thanks • The Place For Giving Thanks • The Motive For Giving Thanks

  6. 1. The Manner For Giving Thanks • Psalm 100:1,2 [NIV] - Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. • a. Give Thanks With The Right Energy • “shout” – Hebrew - means “to make a loud public noise that signals a feeling” • Psalm 100:1 [ESV] - Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!

  7. Praise and thanksgiving should come from deep within our hearts. • “all the earth” ‘everybody’ • Scripture teaches us to quiet ourselves before God to reflect and meditate on Him. • Scripture also teaches that there is a time to raise our voices to sing and make a joyful noise to the Lord as we overflow with thankfulness.

  8. b. Give Thanks Through Right Actions • Giving thanks to God is an act of worship. • Psalm 100:2 [NIV] - Worship the LORD with gladness. • “worship”  also translated “serve” • Psalm 100:2 [ESV] - Serve the LORD with gladness! • We worship God with thanksgiving by giving ourselves to Him for service. • Romans 12:1 [NIV] Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

  9. c. Give Thanks With The Right Attitude • We are called to serve “…with gladness” (v.2) • Psalm 100:2 - come before him with joyful songs. • Our gratitude to God produces an attitude of joy and gladness. • Psalm 98:4 (NIV) Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; • Ephesians 5:20 (NIV) – “always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. 2. The Place For Giving Thanks • Psalm 100:4 - Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; • God’s presence among His people was represented by the Temple In order to come into the inner gates and courtyard of the Temple one had to be ceremonially clean.

  11. God’s presence is now in individual followers of Christ. • 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV) - Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? • We cleanse ourselves through confession and repenting of sin before entering into God’s presences with thanksgiving and praise. • Psalm 66:17–18 (NIV) - I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue. • BUT… If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;

  12. 3. The Motive For Giving Thanks • a. Our Relationship With God • Psalm 100:3 - Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. • The prerequisite to giving thanks to God is knowing Him. • A command “Know that the Lord is God.”

  13. Knowing God means knowing: • He is the LORD – the one true God • Jesus Christ – the Son of God. • Hebrews 1:3 [NIV] - The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

  14. He is the one who created us. • Psalm 139:13–14a [NIV] - For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. • He redeemed us so that we could be called “His people” • He purchased us with the blood of His Son Jesus • He is our shepherd

  15. b. God’s Goodness To Us • Thanksgiving based on the very character of God • Psalm 100:4b,5 - give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. • We serve a Good God.

  16. His Goodness demonstrated in: • His love  a “loyal love” • His faithfulness • His love and faithfulness are the foundation on which we can live in faith and hope. • Let’s gather around the communion table • with joyful hearts • with pure hearts • with thankful hearts!
