  1. Magnetism and the Sun

  2. Is most easily described by its effects—it is easy to see iron objects react or outline lines of magnetic attraction. The Magnetic Force

  3. Michael Faraday made reference to    ’modifiedspace’ --an area apparentlyaffected by the magnetic force.

  4. Magnetic fieldof bar magnet

  5. Magnetic field of electromagnet

  6. The present model Suggests that (ferro) magnetism is related to the spin of valence electrons in elements such as iron, nickel and cobalt

  7. The Earth’s magnetic field Is believed to be caused by movement in the (liquid) outer core due to the spin of the earth.

  8. Is not thought to have distinct metallic cores, BUT… The sun

  9. …does rotate at different speeds at different “latitudes”

  10. Mattermaking up the sun is in the PLASMA state-- Positive nucleiare separatedfromtheirnegative electrons

  11. Here’s the wild side-- When electric particles flow through a circuit—they create a magnetic field

  12. This was discovered By accident, by Hans Christian Oersted in 1820

  13. And described mathematically by Andre-Marie Ampere the same year (Ampere’s Cirucuital Law)

  14. An electriccurrent (I) flowingthrough a circuit produces a magnetic field (B)

  15. They create MANY magnetic fields This means that as charged particles move throughout the sun

  16. What, me worry?
