  1. Hand in Interpreting Information in a Pedigree W.S. before the bell rings please (not 3A) Chapter 8 – Beyond Mendel Sex-linked inheritance Pedigree lab "Attitude is a little thing that can make all the difference." Sir Winston Churchill To review learning pedigree and try our hand a sex-linked pedigree analysis. Title: Biology 2/8/07 Class Topics Objectives: Wednesday, January 1, 20209:14 PM

  2. Class Assignments What By When • Read 177-182 2/8/07 • W.S. Interpreting Information in a Pedigree 2/8/07 • Not 3A • Lab – A Human Pedigree 2/8/07 • W.S. Interpreting Information in a Pedigree (3A) 2/12/07 • W.S. 8.2 (DR/Color Blind/Gene Spy) 2/12/07 • Due this class period • Due next class period • Due in the future

  3. Grade Sheet 2A – p. 157 (5 pts.)

  4. Sex-linked inheritance • Some genes are carried on the X chromosome - Sex-linked genes • Fruit flies example • White eyed male with red eyed female = all red eyed offspring • Crossed two of the F1 offspring and ended up with 3:1 ratio - red to white (all white eyed flies were male!!!)

  5. Sex-linked inheritance • Found mostly in males • Males are hemizygous • Cannot hide recessive allele • Cannot be carriers of trait • Females can show trait • Must be homozygous recessive • Can carry trait (heterozygous) • Has nothing to do with hormones • Sex-influenced traits

  6. X-linked Traits(Human) • Hemophilia • Queen Victoria (1819-1901), clotting factors • Red-Green colorblindness • Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy • affects children 3-6 years old • defective protein causes muscles to weaken

  7. Lab - A Human Pedigree • Work in partners (one sheet, two names) • Older answers odd questions • Younger answers even questions • Turn in when done! • Pick up and work on (by yourself) • W.S. 8.2 (DR/Color Blind/Gene Spy)

  8. Sex-linked Punnett Squares • X X x X Y • Cross a hemophiliac carrier with a person without hemophilia X X X Y

  9. Sex-linked questions • What do you know about the parents of a colorblind girl? • What do you know about the father of a hemophilia carrier Sex-linked Inheritance Hemophilia Pedigree Colorblindness
