  1. Biology Chapter 1 Biology in the 21st Century Mosquito!

  2. KEY CONCEPT Biology is the study of all forms of life. Mosquito!

  3. Section Objectives • Explain the importance incredible diversity of life on Earth! • Elaborate how biology is the scientific study of all forms of life. • Give examples of what living things humans have studied throughout history.

  4. biosphere = everywhere life exists Earth is home to an incredible diversity of life. • Biosphere includes all living things and all places they are found. NASA visualization shows 20 years of continuous satellite observations of plant life on land and at the ocean's surface from 1997 to 2017 https://www.space.com/38806-nasa-satellites-watch-earth-breathe-video.html

  5. Earth is home to an incredible diversity of life. • Every part of the biosphere is connected with every other part. • Biosphere includes many environments. • land environments

  6. Tidepool Estuary = fresh + saltwater • saltwater and freshwater environments • Biosphere environments (cont.) • portions of the atmosphere

  7. Biodiversity is the variety of life. • Generally increases from the poles to the equator. • Greater in areas with consistently warm temperatures. Biodiversity is greater closer to the equator.

  8. A species is one particular type of living thing. • Members of a species can interbreed to reproduce. • About 2 million different living species have been identified. Honeypot ants as seen in Fig 1-1

  9. All organisms share certain characteristics. • Biology is scientific study of all forms of life both living and once living.

  10. “Bio” means living; “logy” means study of • Study of origins and history of life and once-living things • Study of structures of living things • Study how living things interact with one another • Study how living things function

  11. Humans have studied living things throughout history • By studying ancient civilizations and ideas • By studying the scientific revolution to the present time • Learning from the past with new evidence to change the future Spontaneous Generation Mummified Child at St. Louis Science Center

  12. Quick Quiz Time  • Each question will be worth 2 points • You may NOT talk and/or communicate with a classmate • Scores will be collected and recorded at the end of the chapter
