Welcome to 4th Grade • Find your child’s seat • Read your student’s letter and feel free to leave a note back! • Fill out Student Code of Conduct green slip and • return to me(red folder) • Sign-up for donation of items for classroom parties(blue folder) • Health needs-We are a nut (all nuts) sensitive classroom • Send in $10 cash in labeled envelope-party money

  3. Typical Classroom Schedule • Do-Now • Reading Workshop *Special • Healthy Snack • Writing Workshop • Lunch • Math Workshop • S.S./Science • Review homework *Physical Education, Music, Chorus, Art, Research, Book Exchange.

  4. Philosophy • Nurture academic & character development of each child • Balanced literacy classroom • Focus on inquiry, critical thinking, reasoning skills and “staircase” of increasing complexity • Balance of whole class, small group, as well as individual learning

  5. Homework Policy • Homework Monday-Thursday nights **21st Century Tuesday • Independent Reading-minimum 5 days a week • Daily assignments in reading, writing & math with alternating assignments in social studies & science • Importance of reading log and notebook work • Make-up policy: students have one night to make-up missed assignment, unless absent that day.

Assessments • Formal and informal assessments in both reading and writing • Conferring with students-strategy and guided groups • Running Records, Fluency Monitoring & NWEA: October, January, May • New York State Test dates (2 days): • English Language Arts (ELA): Week of March 23rd, 2020 • Math: Week of April 20th, 2020 • Science: Performance – May 19th, 2020 Written – June 1st, 2020

Conferences will take place on: Thursday, December 5th (afternoon and 7:00-9:00pm) Friday, December 6th (afternoon) Thursday, March 5th (afternoon and 7:00-9:00 pm) Friday, March 6th (afternoon) • There will be a notice about sign ups through PTC Wizard. • New Report Card parent meetings-10/30 6:30-7:30 PM Center Street large APR and11/14 6:30-7:30 PM Denton Avenue large APR

Reading Curriculum • Units in fiction and non-fiction • Read-aloud, shared reading, Independent reading • Reading partners as coaches • Book clubs/strategy lessons • Use of rubrics & learning continuums for goal setting & self-assessing • Learning through research: Extreme Weather and Natural Disasters Colonial Life-New York and The American Revolution

Writing Curriculum • Writing process beginning with generating & developing of ideas (structure, craft, elaboration & meaning). • Emphasis on revision & editing strategies within partnerships • Language review, grammar & word study • Writing in various genres-realistic fiction, essays, historical fiction, research reports and independent writing projects • Focus on essay writing-personal, persuasive and literary

Social Studies Curriculum • Research projects developed in conjunction with library/research • Units of study: • Study of NY geography and maps • Native Americans in region that became New York • Explorers-New York • Colonial Period-New York • Revolutionary Period-New York • Government-New York and United States

  11. Science • In order to meet the new NGSS, we use a variety of materials, including PLTW, ESP, and other resources. • Students will learn about engineering, the design process, and physical sciences.

  12. 4th Grade Science • PLTW Modules: Energy-Collisions, Input/Output, The Brain • ESP-Waves • Students will explore, discover, identify, design, develop and explain scientific practices through experiments and problem solving strategies. • Students will explore concepts through problem- based learning • Review and preparation for State Science Test

  13. Math • We use a combination of Go Math and Engage NY resources. • The grade level follows the same curriculum across the district. • Multiple strategies with a focus on problem solving and explaining student’s thinking • Fluency with math facts-practicing in school and at home

  14. IXL • Immersive, adaptive learning • Allows for a unique action plan for each student based on what they know and what comes next.

  15. ELA Websites Storyworks • Online classroom magazine • Content across genres Raz-Kids • Online interactive reading program • Leveled library • Quizzes to check for comprehension • Teacher can monitor usage
