This is not a natural phenomenon, but a hard-earned change that came about as a result of collective action by working people. As workers pushed for rights and protections, a balance between cooperation and subordination in the workplace was struck. This is the history of the labour movement, of workers’ parties and the welfare state itself. Labour relations have now converged not only across the globe, but, significantly, between men and women. However, as the recent history of Western Europe, Russia, China, and the current global economic crisis, teaches us, this is not a straightforward success story. Globalisation of market relations Before globalisation, large swathes of the world were largely independent – including the Americas, tropical Africa, and Oceania – and had developed their own ways of working. As European powers began exploring and trading across the globe, work no longer developed autonomously, but in conjunction and confrontation with new forms from new lands. However the ‘discoveries’ of new lands did not result in a great convergence of labour relations. By 1800, Europeans dominated large parts of the world. But, instead of imposing Western ways of working, they promoted and introduced all kinds of unfree and slave labour. Division of labour How has labour been divided throughout the ages? The first societies were reliant on subsistence agriculture, and everyone had to work together to feed themselves. Once it became possible keep surplus food, labour could be allocated on a large scale. After thousands of years, the earliest cities were built and, 5,000 years ago, the first states were created. In these more complex societies, new forms of employment emerged. People could work for themselves, or in tribute to someone else. From this moment, human history is an eclectic mix of different labour relations that existed alongside and in competition with each other.
