  1. United Arab Emirates UniversityCollege of EngineeringIndustrial Training and Graduation Project UnitGraduation Project II Energy Harvesting from Tap Water Flow Group members: • Ali Al-Ameri 200415898 • FarouqAmin 200319205 • Rashed Al-Marzouqi 200305979 Project Advisors: Dr. AbbasFardoun Dr AdnanHarb Examination Committee: Dr. Chang Hong Gao Dr. Mohamed Abdul-Hafez Dr. Mousa Hussein Fall 2010

  2. Outlines Literature Review Objectives Project’s Steps and Testing Conclusion

  3. Literature Review Water flow : • The most important thing to be considered in determining the water flow to inlet of the transducer is how much input power could inter to the turbine blades. Pin=Q*H*g

  4. Literature Review Electronic Circuit: • The goal of the electronic circuit is to increase the voltage that comes from the generator to a specified value (i.e. 1.5v). • The generator will produce AC Voltage. • AC/DC converter.

  5. Literature Review Buck converter: • It is a step-down DC to DC converter. • It is a switched-mode power supply that uses two switches (a transistor and a diode) and an inductor and a capacitor.

  6. Literature Review Battery Charging: • Battery charger is a device used to put energy into a secondary cell or (rechargeable) battery by forcing an electric current through it.

  7. Literature Review Battery Charging: • The charger has three key functions: • Getting the charge into the battery (charging). • Optimizing the charging rate (stabilizing). • Knowing when to stop (Terminating).

  8. Problem • Fossil fuels cause air, water and soil pollution Environmental effect

  9. Objectives • Find an environmental design that could harvest the energy of water flow in the tap for charging the batteries. • Use the remaining output current to switch on a small light bulb.

  10. Conceptual Design • Micro turbine generator: The wasted water from tap flows through it. • Turbine: is responsible to change the energy of the water to mechanical energy. • Gear box: is responsible to increase the velocity of the rotor to produce more flux in the generator side which will increase the efficiency of the unit.

  11. Conceptual Design Design Specification :

  12. Conceptual Design Design Modification :

  13. Tools Automation Studio : • It is a circuit design, simulation and project documentation software for fluid power system. • Calculates the AC voltage which produced by interring the harvest water to the micro-turbine generator

  14. Tools OrCAD: • Used to simulate the electronic circuit to produce DC voltage which will be used to charge a battery

  15. Tools DipTrace: • It used to create the PCB layout of the electronic circuit

  16. Project’s Steps • Calculation: • The input power and output power from the micro turbine generator was calculated as follow: Pout = η * Pin = 50% * 9.156 = 4.578 W

  17. Project’s Steps • The AC voltage was calculated using Automation Studio software : • For frequency change between 40 Hz and 60 Hz, the variation of was:

  18. Project’s Steps • The electronics circuit was simulated using OrCAD • The main purpose of the software: • Determine the output voltage from the circuit (1.5V). • Verify the output currents from the bridge of diodes, inductors and the switch transistor ( choose components).

  19. Project’s Steps Output voltage of the electronic circuit Diode current Inductance current Transistor current

  20. Project’s Steps • Depending on the current waveforms the following components were chosen for the electronic circuit: • Diode SB5100 • Power inductor FIT106-2 • Power transistor IRLB3036 • Triggering chip IRS21864 • Capacitance with high voltage capability

  21. Project’s Steps 4. The PCB layout was created using DipTrace software : The schematic of electronic circuit board

  22. Project’s Steps PCB Layout: The PCB Layout of the electronic circuit board

  23. Project’s Steps Implementing the PCB circuit : The PCB plate of the electronic circuit Soldering the components on the plate

  24. Testing: Testing the electronic circuit on bread board: The electronic circuit on the bread board The output of the trigger pulse circuit

  25. Testing: The output DC voltage when the input AC voltage is 12 Vac The output DC voltage and current from the electronic circuit.

  26. Testing: Testing the electronic circuit(PCB):

  27. Potential Ethical and/or Environmental Issues • Accept responsibility in making decisions consistent with the safety, health and welfare of the public. • Be honest and realistic in stating claims . • Improve the understanding of technology, its appropriate application, and potential consequences.

  28. Conclusion • The project objectives were completely achieved. • This design is a solution for the environment to reduce the pollution produced from Fossil fuels. • Improving the project by: • Changing the place of the system. • Using coin battery .

  29. Conclusion • Designing the electronic circuit using OrCAD software .(some of the components don’t have footprints in the OrCAD layout). • Using the DipTrace software to create our own footprints. • Testing of the electronic circuits on the bread board; the result doesn’t appear. • Buy new bread board. Challenges and Problems
