  2. Selective Breeding • Selective Breeding: allowing only animals with desired characteristics to produce the next generation. • Nearly all domestic animals and most crop plants have been produced by selective breeding.

  3. Hybridization • Hybridization: crossing dissimilar individuals to bring together the best of both organisms. • E.g. Fuji apples: a cross of Red Delicious and old Virginia Ralls Genet

  4. Inbreeding • Inbreeding: the continued breeding of individuals with similar characteristics. • Risks of Inbreeding: • Small gene pool • Higher chance of genetic defects

  5. Transgenic Organisms • Transgenic: organisms contain genes from other species • A gene from one species can be inserted into cells of another and then be used to grow new organisms.

  6. Types of Transgenic Organisms • Transgenic Microorganisms • Bacteria used to proteins • Transgenic Animals • Study of diseases and production of proteins • Transgenic Plants • Disease resistant crops

  7. Cloning • Clone: a member of a population of genetically identical cells produced from a single cell.
