  2. Speaker Introduction… 12:30 – 13:00 Lean people are the future David Anderson Head of Business Process and Quality BAM Nuttall Brian Swain Chairman The Lean Construction Institute UK @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  3. Looking Back on Construction • Major Construction Industry reviews: • “Latham” - 1994 • “Eagan” - 1998 • “Construction 2025” - 2013 • “Farmer Review” - 2016 • All have said similar things about low productivity, poor engagement & quality, etc. • The Key Question: • What are we going to do that will make a definable and repeatable difference? • The Lean Construction Institute UK was set up to provide practical answers to these issues and questions. @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  4. Lean Construction Institute UK • Educational charity dedicated to researching and disseminatingbest practice and knowledge about Lean Construction throughout the UK  • The Institute is not for profit − all benefits that come to the Institute from services rendered are invested back into fulfilling its purpose • Key knowledge andexpertiseon Lean construction, linked to a global network of Lean Construction Institutes • LCI-UK board has representatives from • Key construction clients: Highways England, Network Rail • Tier 1 contractors: BAM, Costain, Galliford Try • Academia: professors from Huddersfield and Nottingham Trent Universities • Top UK Lean Construction consultancies: Bourton Group, Lean Construction International @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  5. Some Answers • Our vision and purpose • To provide the best, open source, world-class, standardised information on Lean Construction for the UK construction industry • To bring together a best in class development partnership with top companies • To focus on work-based, learning, doing and improving on live construction projects. • What did we plan? • A process of bringing the core Lean methods, tools and approaches together from each of our main partners, their internal Lean Practitioners and external consultants. • Work-based problem solving pilots with the 5 partner companies • Why did we plan it? • There is too much confusion in construction about Lean • Although there were many isolated islands of excellent Lean achievement, there is mainly a wide waste land of confusion, ignorance & apathy in UK construction concerning Lean @Lean_construct#Lean19 @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headlinesponsor Headline Sponsor

  6. We formed a High-level Partnership for Project OnePartners and structure Total project value £732,195 • CITB £480,075 • Partner cash contributions £125,000 • Partner in kind contributions £127,120 (time, venues etc.) @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  7. What we did: • Over 18 months with our partners on five major construction projects we developed & piloted theLean Construction Development Pathway programme • Delivered Introduction to Lean to 300+ learners & training 100 Lean Facilitators • Delivered Lean improvement projects resulting in £12.7 million in audited productivity benefits. • What did we achieve? • Unambiguous, standardised, detailed and audited examples of successful improvements • Established an open source access system to Lean methods, tools, approaches and communities of practice @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  8. The Role of the CITB: • We could never have accomplished these outputs without the direct support from the CITB. • The CITB were and are uniquely positioned to bring practical Lean Construction development to the Value Stream where the work is done – across UK Construction. • They were able to provide funding to develop a learning system, piloting process for a system that directly supports individual learners to produce improved productivity as an integrated learning process. • They can act as development partners to meet emerging industry learning needs to scope further practical, project based, integrated learning and development systems. • They are partnersin creating standards for accessing work based learning programmes for individual levy support and accreditation. @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  9. Next Steps: • The challenge is to deliver a programme to raise standards in procurement practices that will also improve the competences and capabilities of everyone involved in construction projects, across the whole industry. • Traditional procurement practices across major infrastructure construction projects often lead to waste, inefficiency, conflict and excessive cost. • Programmes frequently over-run their original target timescales. • Inefficient procurement practices are broadly cited as a root cause of the poor productivity performance that besets this industry. @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  10. The solution: • The Lean Procurement Development Pathway (LPDP) • With funding from the CITB & at least five Tier 1 partners − to include BAM Nuttall, Galliford Try, Skanska − LPDP project will improve productivity and performance on three major Highways England projects • LPDP will create a fully integrated, end-to-end procurement process through strategic value stream mapping, collaborative planning, focused, work-based Lean training and focussed problem solving • This will enable our partner contractors and their supply chain to develop their capability & capacity to collaboratively deliver projects cheaper, better and faster @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  11. What will the Pilot deliver? • 1,200people trained in Lean continuous improvement • Train 100 Lean Improvement Project Leaders. • Deliver 80 improvement projects completed with anticipated client-approved savings of £20 million • A system: • for recording, tracking and sharing of learning and achievement at learner team, company, project and industry level. • For sharing and dissemination of innovative solutions through LCI-UK’s Lean Construction School portal • A matrix-based Lean procurement competency framework that can be delivered by CITB-approved training organisations in all sectors and geographical areas • A scalable blueprint for Lean procurement improvement that can be rolled out into the entire infrastructure sector and into the wider construction industry @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  12. The Role of LCI-UK: • We are a service and project management organisation established to meet the Lean development needs of the UK construction industry • We are dedicated to facilitate the most efficient access for Lean Construction information, development methods and approaches for the UK Construction industry • We will continue to forge open development partnerships across the UK Construction industry for Continuous Improvement. • We are an open membership organisation for the UK Construction Industry @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  13. The Role of partner companies • (Clients & the whole Contracting Supply Chain) • Because Lean Construction is • a Business, Operational, Organisational and Developmental Strategy for High Performance and Continuous Improvement • Which has a Philosophy, Principles, Methods and Practices that apply to all elements of business management and development. • It can only be learned, practiced, applied and developed on live construction projects. @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  14. BAM are Committed to @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor

  15. Why Have BAM Nuttall made a leadership • commitment to the LCI-UK pathway programme? • We need a more efficient way of determining our supply chains Lean capacity and capability • We need greater Supply chain engagement and collaboration • We need to improve our understanding of the value chain in complex construction environments to engage every company and their people to deliver and enhance the value. • We need to up skill the people of our whole supply chain to have the capabilities to • increase efficiency and effectiveness on all our projects • Increase the capacity to identify and deliver change • We need to create conditions for sharing Value and Benefits with all our partners @Lean_construct#Lean19 9 OCTOBER 2019 | NEC, BIRMINGHAM Headline Sponsor
