Earliest signs of occupation seem to date from C7th/6th BC. • Origins may be Oscan (local Italian people), Etruscan or Greek with Samnite participation. • Earliest part of the town in SW corner. • A flourishing town by late C3rd BC. • Loyal to Rome during Hannibal’s invasion. • Fought against Rome in the Social Wars 91-88 BC.

Besieged by Sulla and forced to surrender. • Spared from destruction. • Became a Roman colony – Colonia Cornelia Veneria Pompeiana. • Governed by duumvirs and a town council. • Damaged by an earthquake in AD 62. • Rebuilding still in progress when the town was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.
