  2. Ancient Egypt • Nile River provided fertile soil needed for growing crops • Worked like clockwork but major consequences if it flooded too much or too little. Yearly flooding brought water and rich soil. Allowed for settlements to grow. Left a rich soil called silt. • Egyptians date back to 5000 BC

  3. Environmental Factors • Unlike the unpredictable Mesopotamian Valley, the Nile River worked like clockwork. • When the floods were low, many people starved. When the floods were high, destroyed civilization, including crops. • Provided a good natural barrier from other people, but also forced Egyptians to live on a small portion of land.

  4. Upper and Lower Egypt • River area in the SOUTH is called the Upper Egypt. River area in the NORTH is called the Lower Egypt. • Lower Egypt is called the Nile Delta Region. Delta region begins about 100 miles before the Mediterranean. • Nile provides a reliable system of transportation. River flows north. Travelers going south use the prevailing winds of Egypt. • Theocracy (Know of any current day theocracies?) • Kings ruled after their death

  5. Egyptian Religion • To the Egyptians, the kings were gods. • Egyptian god-kings were called pharaohs • Pharaohs stood at the center of Egypt’s religion as well as its government and army. • Pharaohs casued the sun to rise, flooding, and crops to grow. • Also, promoted truth and justice.

  6. Ancient Egypt • Tombs were more important than palaces • Pyramids showed strength of Egyptian society • King ruled after his death. • Believed that the king had an eternal life force, or ka. • Tombs were even more important than their palaces. Resting place - pyramids
