This pilot study utilized scripted format where Research Associates approached ED patients and visitors weekly, obtaining consent and taking detailed tobacco histories. Referrals to CT Quitline were offered to smokers. Over 21 weeks, 63 RAs approached 4613 potential participants with 78% enrollment. Findings show 54% have used tobacco, with 22% smoking within the past 30 days. A substantial portion of Quitline referrals were made, making this study significant in tobacco cessation efforts in EDs.
