  1. Chapter 3 Product and Service Design

  2. What are the reason for Product and Service Design or Redesign? • Economic Reason • Political and Legal • Social and Demographic • Competitiveness • Technological

  3. Product design • Product design is the process of identifying a market opportunity, clearly defining the problem, developing a proper solution for that problem and validating the solution with real users. • Defining the product vision • Product research • User analysis • Ideation • Design • Testing and validation • Post-launch activities • Service Design • The activity of planning and organising people, infrastructure, communication and material components of a service in order to improve its quality and the interaction between service provider and customers. The purpose of service design methodologies is to design according to the needs of customers or participants, so that the service is user-friendly, competitive and relevant to the customers.Qualitative research including observations and interviews are conducted, allowing the designer to foresee a variety of situations in which the user may interact with the service

  4. What Does Product and Services Design Do? • Market Research about the customer want and need. • Document Specification. • Involve inter functional collaboration • Formulate Quality goals • Formulate cost Target • Construct and test Prototype • Translate those needs and wants into the shape of goods and services. • Refine existing Products and services. • Develop new products and services • Lunch into the market

  5. Emerging issues in product and service Design Concurrent Engineering Value Analysis Quality Function Deployment(QFD)

  6. Value Analysis it is the systematic methods to improve the value of product and services. It is the process of identifying and solving the problem and eliminating the unwanted cost while improve the function and quality that will satisfying the customer needs in lowest cost. Value creation should be given to the first priority in the value analysis.(value-to-cost ratio, ensuring that the benefits derived from a product or process outweigh the associated costs) Value= Function/ Cost Concurrent Engineering It involves the formation of cross functional teams which allow managers of different discipline or department work together simultaneously in developing the product and process design. It is basically related to the development of new product. It is non linear product design process. (simultaneous and collaborative involvement of cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle) Quality function deployment(QFD) (Strong link between customer expectations and the product/service attributes) Quality function deployment is a systematic approach of specifying the customer needs and desires, rating them in terms of priority and designing the quality products and process to serve these requirements, through proper planning. OFD is the design of products by representing the voice of customers through research by different ways. QFD takes 4p key stepsmust follow the six sigma.
