  4. The APGAR: The score is based on observation of: • Heart rate • Respiratory effort • Muscle tone • Reflex irritability • Color Each item is given a score of 0, 1,or 2. The most frequently used method to assess the newborn's immediate adjustment to extra-uterine life.

  5. What It Means: Severe Distress 0-3 1 Minute of Birth 5 Minutes of Birth Moderate Difficulty 4-6 Absence of Difficulty 7-10

  6. Some Limitations: Quick Assessment (makes the case for continuous monitoring) Parents (not a predictor of intellectual/physical performance)
