  2. About Myself About Myself • I am Principal Engineer at IIT Kanpur and I manage the Campus IT, Network and Internet Services of IITK. Currently visiting IIITD as a Visiting Faculty for two semesters. • IIT Kanpur has one of the largest networks in the country. • IITK Campus Network now has more than 20000 nodes providing connectivity to more than 8000 users in Academic Departments, Student Hostels and Residences. • IITK has 3 Gbps Internet Connectivity. • All application servers (Mail, DNS, Proxy Caching, Web etc.) are maintainedin-house. • B.Tech (1990) and M.Tech (1996) from IIT Kanpur • Working in IIT Kanpur for more than 20 years

Course Objective Course Objective • This course is intended for second year B.Tech students, who wish to improve skills through hands-on experience in Network Administration. • Students who successfully complete these courses, will be offered part-time work for System and Network Admin in the institute and will be expected to work for at least two semesters. They will also be given credits for the work.

Course Objective Course Objective The course will cover: • Computer Network Design, Layout & Administration, Network Performance, Internet Architecture, Network Security, Network and Internet Applications etc. • Develop a conceptual understanding of Computer Network Internals, Network Administration and Performance Analysis. • Enable the students to diagnose and troubleshoot Network problems and manage various Internet Application Servers.

Course Outline Course Outline • Credits: 2 Credits • Contact Hours:1.5 hours per week (Total expected work: Appx 5 hrs per week) • Mode of Teaching: Classroom Discussions, Practical Assignments, Industry Visits, Seminars by Industry Speakers and one Project. For most topics, students will be expected to read prescribed material which will be further discussed in the class. Course Content Assignment • There will be eight take home assignments • All the assignments have been designed to give you hands on experience on the topics being covered in the lectures. • You are expected to use your personal laptop to do the assignments • References which will be helpful in the assignments will be provided in the course website.

  12. Course Content Project • There will be one project, to be done individually. • Some suggested topics have been given in the course outline. However any other topic related to systems can be chosen.

  13. Grading Grading Guidelines • Two Exam: 15% each • Lab Assignment: 30% (2.5% each) • Project: 40%
