  1. CernVM-FS Version Overview • Components • Client • Stratum 1 Software (replication tools)Runs at CERN, RAL, FNAL, BNL, ASGC • Stratum 0 Software (cvmfs server)Runs at CERN for WLCG repositoriesInstallations at GridPP, OSG, EGI planned • Compatibility • Need to upgrade all clients and stratum 1s before stratum 0s can be updated

  2. CernVM-FS 2.0 / 2.1 Branches • CernVM-FS 2.0 • The 2.0 branch started in 2009 as a prototype • Served us well on the client side, although there are some known “won’t fix” bugs • Latency problems at Stratum 1s • Serious risks on the Stratum 0: number of inodes, backups, large files • Large files in the repositories are an issue on grid sites • Platforms: SL5/6 (Client, Stratum 1), SL5 only (Stratum 0) • CernVM-FS 2.1 • Rewrite based on the experience and feature wishes from the 2.0 branch • Platforms: SL5/6, SuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Mac OS X (client only) Intel, ARM • New features: shared local cache, NFS support, hotpatching, file system snapshots, file chunking, … • Some of the features require the full chain to be on 2.1 branch

  3. CernVM-FS Deployment Roadmap • CernVM-FS 2.1 Deployment Status • WLCG recommended client version is 2.1 • ALICE: almost all on 2.1, LHCb: ~10 sites still on 2.0, ATLAS/CMS: ? • Stratum 1, version 2.1: • FNAL, BNL: production • CERN, RAL: pre-production • ASGC: ? • Stratum 0: in deployment for ATLAS/LHCbnightlies, at GridPP, new repositories at Cern • Proposal • End-of-life for all CernVM-FS 2.0 components: 30. June 2014Exception: Stratum 0 at CERN • By that time: all clients + Stratum 1s migrated,2.1 Stratum 0 software tested under production load from ATLAS/LHCb nightly servers • Third quarter of 2014: migration of WLCG 2.0 repositories to 2.1 (automated migration utility exists) Side constraint: I will be out of office June-September 2014

  4. CernVM EOL (not CernVM-FS) • CernVM 2.X • Current CernVM 2.X based on SL5 • Based on Conary and other rPath tools • rPath does not exist anymore • CernVM 3 • Based on µCernVMbootloader and RPM • SL6 based image • No vendor lock-in • Beta release available since CHEP2013, positive feedback from early adaptors (ATLAS, LHCb, …) • Deployment / EOL Proposal: • I’d need advice from experiments on the validation • CernVM 3 Release Jan/Feb 2013 • CernVM 2 EOL: 31. September 2014
