  3. The Global Challenge • There are total of 473 different types of manufacturing industries, • Everything from guided missiles to manufacturing tortilla’s, • Growth in manufacturing is increasing around the world, • The U.S. still ranks as the number one country for manufacturing,

The Global Challenge • Japan is ranked second based on: • It’s focus on lifetime employment, • Implementing robotic technology, • Currently Japan owns 410,000 of the 720,000 known operational robots in the world, • The automotive industry has a huge impact on manufacturing: • When sales are up, manufacturing thrives, • When sales are down, plants close,

The Global Challenge • Manufacturing means “production” of a(n) item, • Lean production is sometimes referred to a “Lean manufacturing”, • Involves more than just producing quality products, it includes: • Just in time production, • On-time parts supply, • Continually studying the assembly process to make improvements,

International Manufacturing • International manufacturing relies on: • Cheap labor, • Transportation costs, • Government incentives, • Company partnerships, • Production moves to Mexico, • NAFTA- North American Free Trade Agreement, • Encouraged free trade between U.S., Canada, and Mexico, • Created “maquiladora”, • Industrial parks located in Mexico, owned by Mexican and American companies,
