Health Information Exchange: The need for standards By: Emily Kneeream
General Overview • Electronic Health Information Exchange (HIE) • HIE provides Health Care providers and their patients a way to access and securely share a patient’s vital medical information electronically • Thus improving the speed, quality, safety and cost of patient care. • HIE is highly supported by Government funds, therefore the future is bright.
HIE Issues • Tests results/records may be too easily accessed • There is a need for users to learn about HIE before using them. • Constant growth and change • Enormous amount of unused/unwanted data • Patient privacy/security issues
Solution • Health Information Technology (HIT) Policy Committee and HIT Standards Committee • In relations with the National Coordinator • Working together to solve issues • The HIT Policy Committee has different workgroups actively involved in different aspects of health IT policy.
