And She Happened To Come… • Saying by the Rabbis - “Co-incidences are not kosher” • Reports her good fortune to Naomi • Naomi’s mind goes to work • She instructs Ruth in the customs of the land • She understood the significance of the gift Ruth brought when she returned the next morning after her encounter with Boaz • She must have been excited!

  5. Under Your Wing (Hem) • Hem - the bottom edge of his garment • Hem symbolized a man’s authority David’s remorse (1 Sam 24:5) • Used to enforce a contract • Symbolic in divorce • Account in Luke 8:41-50 • Ruth’s real intentions towards Boaz

  6. The Kinsman Redeemer • The Kinsman Redeemer could say no • Four conditions needed to be met: He had to be qualified as a kinsman He had to be able to perform He had to be willing He had to assume all obligations

  7. Boaz • He is the hero of this book • He approaches the nearer kinsman • The nearer kinsman agrees to one obligation but not the other • Before witnesses the deal is completed • He redeems the land for Naomi and takes Ruth as his bride • Ruth becomes the grandmother of David

  8. Types & Symbols • Naomi is a type of Israel she has been dispossessed of her land she is destitute unable to redeem her land her loss that connects her with a Gentile she provides instruction to Ruth (through the law) she regains her land through Ruth’s connection to Boaz

Types & Symbols • Ruth is a type of the Gentile bride of Christ she too was destitute an unnamed servant introduced Ruth to Boaz her encounter with Boaz came through Naomi she gleaned till the end of the barley harvest and the wheat harvest she initiates her future relationship with Boaz (hem of his garment) she repays Naomi by helping her regain her land

Boaz • Boaz is a type of Jesus – our Kinsman Redeemer he met all the requirements he chose to do it no matter how much he wanted her - it was her move the nearer kinsman declined the opportunity Boaz stood in Ruth’s place to confront him he redeemed the land for Naomi (Israel) he also took a Gentile Bride (Ruth)

  11. Boaz - The Redeemer • Royal Prince in the Line of Judah • Lord of the Harvest • Exactly followed the law in every detail • Gave Ruth the water of life (2:9) • He promised her a reward (2:12) • He gave Ruth bread & wine (2:14)

Boaz - The Redeemer • In order to follow she had to separate herself • Ruth worked till the end of the harvest Matt 13:3-23; Matt 20:1-16 • Ruth purified with water and anointed • Boaz redeemed her inheritance in the morning • He paid the redemption price for her (1 Peter 1:18,19) • Through the faith of Ruth, Naomi’s bitterness was turned to joy!
