  3.  Your task • Read p.64-5 (Wilkes) or p. 136-7 (SHP) and around the picture note down the ways in which women were encouraged to help the regime. Include the following: KKK; professions & careers; fashion; financial support; Lebensborn  Produce a factoid on Gertrude Scholtz-Klink, Head of Nazi Women’s Bureau

Nazi policy to women Woman’s place in the home – have children, care for family KKK – Kinder, Kirche, Küche Resign work in favour of men – female doctors, judges, teachers etc sacked Dress modestly – flat heels, long skirts etc. Have large families – Honour Cross Financial incentives – loans for newly-weds

  5. What do you think is the message of this Nazi propaganda poster from the early 1930s? Spot any words in German you have studied today?

  6.  Your task Read p.138 in SHP and note down ways in which attitudes to women changed during the late 1930s. Read p.139 and note down why women continued to support the Nazis

  8. What’s so shocking about this planned Nazi policy from 1943?  How different are these attitudes from before the party came to power? “All single and married women up to the age of 35, who do not already have four children, must have four children. The fathers should be racially pure German men. It does not matter if these men are married or not. Any family that already has children must set the husband free for this action.”

  9. Read the example of a Nazi lonely hearts advert on p.137. In small groups have a go at writing your own lonely hearts advert for an Aryan Nazi woman. Read the adverts around the room. Imagine you are a loyal member of the Nazi Party. Place a tick in the bottom left-hand corner to indicate which lady you are most interested in!

  10. A Nazi propaganda poster from 1937. In what ways does this poster support Nazi attitudes towards women? How useful is this poster in understanding Nazi attitudes towards women during the Third Reich?

  11.  Plenary • Explain the following: KKK; professions & careers; fashion; financial support; Lebensborn • What were Nazi attitudes to women like at these times: • 1932 • 1937 • Why did they change? • Do you think attitudes towards young people also changed?

  12.  Homework Use plenty of PEE! • How did the Nazis try to control the lives of women and children. It should be at least 1 side of A4 in total. Include references to the following: • Policies • Propaganda • Organisations like the German Maidens League • Laws directed at women and families
