  2. Being stuck on a busy metro Being in a lift Describe a place that you hate… Describe to the person next to you a place that you hate being. If you say “in English with Miss Simpson” I will be less than impressed.

  3. Language Unit OneSection B: Question 5 “Write an entry for your online blog, describing a place you hate and explain why you dislike it so much.” This is an example question that you could be asked. Today you’re going to have a go at writing a response to this question. Firstly, get an A3 sheet and write your place that you hate in the centre circle.

  4. My place that I hate being… Step 1: Details Patients spreading germs everywhere Children making noise, playing with toys Posters and leaflets about disease The doctor’s waiting room Harsh, white walls Feeling all hot and nervous The thought in my head of having to get a needle Fake and pretentious receptionist In your next circle I want you to think of the reasons why you hate that place – what little things about that place would you describe and explain in your answer? Fill in your circle in as much detail as possible. The more details you have to write about, the better.

  5. My place that I hate being… Sound: ‘Spluttering and coughing filled my ears.’ Step 2: Language Choices Patients spreading germs everywhere Children making noise, playing with toys Posters and leaflets about disease The doctor’s waiting room Power of three: ‘The walls are white, cold and sterile’ Harsh, white walls Feeling all hot and nervous The thought in my head of having to get a needle Fake and pretentious receptionist Smell: ‘Her repulsive perfume.’ Adjectives: ‘The excruciating pain.’ In your next circle I want you to think about the language techniques you would use in order to describe this place. You don’t have to use all of them – but think about language choices that might fit well with the elements you’ve decided to describe.

  6. Now you have some ideas…read the sample answers using the ‘how to do well’ checklist. We are going to have a look at two example answers in order to establish how to write an effective answer before you have a go yourself. Grab the sheet that matches your colour and read and highlight where the answer has effectively used a feature from the checklist.

  7. Pair up and compare student A’s answer to student B’s • Compare your example answer to the other. • Which one is better? • Explain in as much detail as you can why you think this. • Discuss how you would improve it even further.

  8. Now it’s over to you… You have a strict 25 minutes to write, independently and in exam conditions, a response to the question… ‘Write an entry for your online blog, describing a place you hate and explain why you dislike it so much.’ I don’t want to see an unfinished answer – use this time wisely to write a full answer.
