  1. Red Eye?! What is it? What to do about it. 1

  2. What is this Phenomena called Red Eye? The red-eye effect is caused by light from the flash passing through the pupil and being reflected on the retina. The retina at the back of the eyeball has a plentiful supply of blood and makes the entire pupil look red. 2

  3. What to do with your camera settings. Built in flash settings: Because the lens and flash are very close together, red-eye has a greater probability of occurring. • Lower the risk, get further away from your subject. Take your photo at a slight angle rather than straight on. • Use the preflash setting.(reduces red-eye by forcing the pupil to contract). • Avoid dark rooms, look for better lighting conditions. • Use the red-eye reduction setting on your camera. • Use a tripod and try the Slow-sync with red-eye reduction setting. (indoors especially) 3

  4. What to do with your camera settings.External flash : Analog remedies If your camera has a hot shoe, the external dedicated flash should be bounced up, down and away from the center of the eye. or Try using a cable that would allow you to use the external flash as a hand held unit away from the lens of the camera. 4

  5. Slave flash attachments. Strobeframe flash brackets : Provide perfectly centered, overhead flash, Eliminating side shadows and the “red-eye”phenomena. For more information check their site: http://www.saundersphoto.com/html/strobo.htm 5

  6. Hand built flash reflectors. You can use reflectors to redirect incident light. The incident light from the flash is not reflected from the Eye directly into the camera lens. Bryan Biggers has a unique example on his site: http://webpages.charter.net/bbiggers/DCExperiments/html/reflectors 6

  7. Using the digital darkroom, alternative correction for Red-Eye. Several Computer programs are available to help retouch photos that have red-eye elements. • PhotoShop • Photo elements • Photo Impact. • Paintshop Pro Several Freeware/shareware programs are available to download. • Photo Wizard • PC Suite 602 Album • Image Force • Graphic Converter For more info: http://www.americansys.com/photowizard.htm http://www.software602.com 7

  8. Using PhotoShop: Manual Solution • Select the paintbrush tool after opening the program and the desired file. • Choose a feathered edge. • Choose the size of the paintbrush to match the pupil size. • Select the color mode. • Zoom in. • Paint in the pupil. 8
