Point Loma Nazarene University • Christian four-year, residential, private, liberal arts university • Intimate community with about 1800 students living on campus and a total enrollment of about 2300 undergraduates. • Over 62 Different Majors and Concentrations offered • Average class size: 24 students • Student to Faculty Ratio: 14 to 1

Some PLNU Notables • 90% of pre-Med students get into medical school (National Average 40%) • 98% of Nursing Students pass their boards • 40% Accounting Majors pass the accounting exam in their first attempt (National Average 17%) • #1 National Championship Debate Team (Includes all Universities; UCLA finished #37) • #15 Study Abroad Program in the nation • Respected Teacher Education Program • Intercollegiate Athletics Program – NCAA Div. General Academic Information • Academic year consists of two 16 week semesters, with shorter summer sessions • Minimum full time course load = 12 units • Block tuition system, with one cost for 12-17 units • Students must be full time to qualify to live on campus • Reduced course load (<12 units) units may impact Financial Aid

  5. Disability Resource Center(DRC) • Support and academic accommodations for students with disabilities • Provided under guidelines of ADA and Section 504

  6. Services Provided to Students with Disabilities • Teacher notification of accommodations • Academic advisor notification • Academic counseling • Free tutorial assistance • Accessible classrooms/residence halls • Alternative testing arrangements • Note-taking assistance • Assistive technology and Books on CD

  7. Process for Requesting Accommodations • Application-Acceptance-Accommodation • Contact DRC to apply for accommodations • Submit completed application (must include documentation) • Director determines reasonable accommodations • Notification • Follow-up • Regular review

  8. Role of Faculty and Academic Support Staff • After receiving written notification from DRC, faculty and DRC collaborate to develop a reasonable accommodation plan. • DRC encourages students to establish close, supportive relationships with faculty.

  9. Accommodations in Higher Education • Faculty and DRC work to help students meet same performance standards as their non-disabled peers. • Accommodations support success without fundamentally altering the structure or content of a course. • DRC collaborates with faculty to promote development of time management and study skills, to facilitate regular class attendance, and on time submission of class assignments.

  10. Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society • Academic achievement of students with disabilities is recognized by membership. • Local chapter sponsors mentoring program for incoming students with disabilities. • Chapter activities provides leadership and community service opportunities.
