  1. LCNR GPS: SS6G10 The student will explain the impact of location, climate, natural resources, and population distribution in Europe. EQ: Why are people attracted to certain regions in which to live?

  2. Geography’s impact on people and trade • POPULATION DISTRIBUTION • Geography impacts populations • Mountains affect population distribution • Most of Europe’s population and major cities are in lower elevations • Affects what areas become industrialized cities and more economically developed.

  3. LOCATION • A specific place on the Earth. • Rivers and seas have been important • People and industries settle along rivers because of the fertile shores and access to travel and trade. • Seas provide water (trade) routes

  4. UNITED KINGDOM • Western Europe • Islands • NW of France

  5. RUSSIA • Northern Asia/Europe • West of the Urals • Borders the Arctic Ocean • Between Europe and the North Pacific Ocean

  6. ITALY • Southern Europe • Peninsula extending into the central Mediterranean Sea

  7. GERMANY • Central Europe • Borders the Baltic Sea and the North Sea

  8. CLIMATE • Weather patterns typical for an area over a long period of time. • Areas with milder climates usually have larger populations. • People like to live in places that do not get too cold or too hot. • Use the atlas pg. 140 to find the climates of UK, Russia, Italy, and Germany.

  9. NATURAL RESOURCES • Substance from the earth that is not made by people but can be used by them. • Areas rich in farmland have larger populations • Many of Europe’s largest cities are located on the Great European Plain • Use the atlas pg. 142 to find the energy resources and metals used in UK, Russia, Italy, and Germany.

  10. POPULATION DISTRIBUTION • The pattern of population in a country, a continent, or the world. • Use the atlas pg. 143 to find the majority of the populations in UK, Russia, Italy, and Germany.
