Technology & Data: Connecting schools • E-Rate ModernizationThe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will invest $2 billion over the next two years to dramatically expand high-speed Internet connectivity for America’s schools and libraries — connecting 20 million more students to next-generation broadband and wireless. • Private Sector CommitmentsOver $2 billion of private sector commitments have been made in support of the ConnectED initiative. Companies are providing software, hardware, connectivity, and digital media to support the transition to digital learning. • Department of Education ResourcesFormula grants (ESEA Title I, II, III, IDEA) can be used to fund the transition to digital learning.
Technology & Data: Federal support • The U.S. Department of Education’s new ED Data Inventory is a searchable website containing descriptions about data that the Department collects as part of program and grant activities, as well as statistical data collections. • Richer information about the Department’s data makes this information more accessible and understandable to researchers, developers, and entrepreneurs. • The aim of the ED Data Inventory is to use freely available government data alongside other resources to advance new educational studies and services.
Technology & data: Federal support • The State Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) Grant Program, administered through the Institute of Education Sciences, aims to improve state data systems by strengthening linkages among early learning, K-12 education, higher education, and workforce data.
Learning powered by technology: The connected initiative • In 2013, President Obama announced the ConnectED initiative, which aims to ensure that students have access to high-speed broadband and wireless Internet to expand connectivity to more schools and libraries over the next five years. • ConnectED will bring high-speed Internet within reach for tens of millions of America’s students—also empowering more teachers and schools to harness the power of digital learning.
Learning powered by technology: The Connected initiative • The main components of ConnectED include: • Connecting 99 percent of students to high-speed broadband Internet within five years; • Upgrading connectivity by modernizing and leveraging the existing E-Rate program; • Providing training for teachers so every educator in America receives support to use technology to help improve student outcomes; and • Encouraging private sector innovation to provide feature-rich educational devices that are price-competitive with basic textbooks.
Personalized learning: Race to the top-district grant program • Federal funds from the Race to the Top-District (RTT-D) program support locally developed plans to: • Personalize and improve student learning, • Increase student achievement and educator effectiveness, • Close achievement gaps, and • Prepare every student for success in college and careers. • With support from RTT-D, teachers are tailoring instruction to meet students' needs, collaborating in new ways, and providing their students with resources to access a world-class education no matter where students are—often through innovative uses of technology.
Learning powered by technology: Support for educators • The Connected Educators project is designed to help educators leverage online communities of practice to interact in ways that improve teacher and leader effectiveness and enhance student learning. • Through more efficient and coordinated online participation, educators will be better able to share practices, access experts, and solve problems that require systemic solutions in order to improve the opportunity to learn.
Technology & data: The need for bandwidth • Since 2009, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Commerce have provided about $7 billion in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to improve or expand broadband service in more than 7,000 schools—with more than 3,300 additional schools slated for connection or upgrading.
