  3. The Band 4 role • ‘Probably studying for foundation degree or BTEC higher. Some of their remit will involve them in delivering protocol-based clinical care that had previously been in the remit of registered professionals, under the direction and supervision of a state registered professional’ www.skillsforhealth.org.uk

Developing New roles • Patients expect that those providing their care are knowledgeable and competent • Support workers need to be confident of their abilities in this new and changing environment • Registered professionals need to feel confident in delegating activities to their support workers • Should be trained and qualified to a national standard – completion of a Foundation degree

  5. Core Modules • Level HE1 • Skills for learning (includes ECDL 1,2,3&7) • Major Health issues – diseases, illness and risk behaviour • Social context of health and illness • Level HE2 • Ethics and Law and practice • Evidence based practice • Project

  7. Developing technical roles in health care • Focus on service need not a reward for individual competence • Create new pathways for new roles • Accurate job descriptions How to support small specialist groups? • Theatres • Plaster technician • Audiology/Ophthalmology

  8. Financial Implications • 1st Year – 70% of the top of band 4 • 2nd Year – 75% of the top of band 4 • On Qualification and once signed off as competent they will be paid on the first pay point of the band 4. • Employees relinquish band 2 and 3 positions – got to succeed

Validation of the Partnership – Supporting the Employer Patient • Flexed to the needs of the patient pathway and to new roles – Government directive Employee • Starting salary is £2761 per annum less than a newly qualified band 5 • Training is vocationally focussed & takes best of previous training avoids glass ceiling Employer • Focused to local workforce development – Government directive • Recruitment and retention University • Widening participation – Government directive • Expanding the health and social care portfolio
