  4. SIMPLE PAST -ED 1- General rule Simplyadd –ed to the base form of the verb. Examples: answer / answered show / showed visit / visitedfill / filled 2- Verbsending in -y When the –yispreceded by a vowel, apply the generalrule. Examples: play / playedenjoy / enjoyed stay/ stayedpray/ prayed

  5. SIMPLE PAST -ED When the –y ispreceded by a consonant, change the –y for an –i and add-ed. Examples: carry / carriedcry / cried try/ triedstudy/ studied 3- Doubled consonant With verbs of one or two syllables that end by a consonant + a vowel + a consonant, double the last consonant and add –ed. Examples: drop / dropped stop / stopped tap/ tappedrub / rubbed
