Course Introduction • Credits: 2.0 hrs Goals: 1) To provide an overview of the issues and practices of natural resource management; 2) To provide an in-depth examination of the multi-factors which need to be considered for sustainable natural resource management; and 3) To provide a set of reference tools and hands-on skills. • Grades: 2 project reports 20% • 1 individual presentation 10% • 1 group class presentation 20% • 1 final course article 40% • Attendance, participation 10%

  3. 2. Concepts and Definitions • Resources An organization or person: materials, money and other things that they have and can use in order to function properly. A country: the things it has and can use to increase its wealth, such as coal, oil, land, water or forests. • Natural Resources Resources existed in the nature • Natural Resource Management (Discussion) • International Natural Resource Management (INRM) (Discussion)

  4. 3. Why Do We Study INRM? 3.1 Three Issues in the World: • Population Increase • Biodiversity Loss • Global Climate Change

  5. 3. Why Do We Study INRM? 3.2 Production Expansion • Production/Products Increase to Meet People’s Demands, such as in Food Production, Oil Production, and hence, Gross Domestic Product

  9. 3. Why Do We Study INRM? Issues Directly Related to INRM We Are Currently Facing: • Available Arable Land Declined • Forest Coverage Reduced • Water Shortage • Ecosystem Good and/or Service Decreasing • Ecosystem Decline

  10. 3. Why Do We Study INRM? More Issues Indirectly Related to INRM We Are Currently Facing: • There Are still a Lot of Low-income/Poor People in the World; • Uneven Wealth Distribution; and • Backward/Traditional Farming System
