GOES Operations StatusApril 2009 • GOES-12 Operational East • Occasional thruster anomalies, minimal impact to operations. • Imager decontamination performed during Dec/Jan thruster anomaly. • On-board fuel remaining to support operations until Summer 2010. GOES-11 Operational West • Battery performance improved following change in charge management process. • Engineers report better than expected battery recovery, no services shed from GOES-11 during Spring 09 eclipse.

  5. GOES Operations StatusApril 2009 GOES-10 Provides South America Imaging Support Sounder filter wheel stalled on 2/8/09. Sounder no longer operating. GOES-10 will be decommissioned November 2009. End of fuel life. GOES-13 in Storage Mode as operational spare. GOES-O launch No earlier than late June 09. Operational XRS data will be provided by GOES-O following the decommissioning of GOES-10. 5

POES Constellation Operations Status • NOAA-18 Operational PM • High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) noise continues, Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) operating in a “No-HIRS” mode. • Meteorological Operational Satellite(MetOp)-2 Operational AM • Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) channel 7 noise continues to exceed specs. • Operational ATOVS adjusted to use other channels(1/28/09). • European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (Eumetsat) extending High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) coverage to Eastern US for Hurricane season (May 9th) • Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) vector files produced operationally and sent to Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) (10/22/08). • NOAA-17 AM Backup • AMSU-A1 • Power off. Only heater remain powered on.

POES Constellation Operations Status • NOAA-16 PM Secondary • AMSU A1 Channel 4 unusable • out of spec performance (confirmed on 4 March 2008). • HIRS downgraded to YELLOW status because of long wave channel degradation. • Longwave channels are currently out of noise-equivalent change in radiance (NEDN) noise specification by a large amount. • NOAA-15 AM Secondary • AMSU-A • Total failure of channel 11 • Stopped sending data for channel 14 • HIRS • Channels 14, 16 and 17 out if spec • Filter wheel issues 9

  10. POES Constellation Operations Status • Jason-2 • ESPC routinely produces Jason-2 Operational Geophysical Data Records (OGDRs) and the OGDR’s available publicly through Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS) as of Jan 15, 2009. 10

NOAA-19 Status • NOAA-19 Satellite launched February 6, 2009 • Launched into afternoon orbit • No major problems • NOAA-19 Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) Constellation meeting held on April 16 • NOAA will declare NOAA-19 operational on June 2, 2009 • Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS)entered “Spin state” followed by “Fault Mode” on 24 April • Recovered the same day • AMSU-A Sudden Jump correction implemented May 5, 2009 • Attitude error observed in Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and source is being investigated • Correction developed and under test 11

  13. Spacecraft Priorities *Once NWS NCEP EMC begins processing ozone data operationally from N18 the priorities for N17 and N15 will be switched.  This is scheduled to happen in Sep 2009.

  15. POES NOAA satellite data processing and products. MetOp data processing and products. Level 1b processing. GOES East and West Advance Front End Processor (AFEP) processing (subset). Data Acquisition Processing and Exchange (DAPE) (Shared Processing Program) Gateway capabilities. LOW-RATE INFORMATION TRANSMISSION (LRIT) (without Emergency Managers Weather Information Network and Data Collection System). Remote monitoring. Remote administration Through phone line to restore network connectivity. Via virtual private network (VPN) for system connectivity. Remote and local activation/deactivation. Local monitoring moved to the “Quiet Room” in the Wallops Facility. Ability to synchronize individual files or groups of files between NSOF and OBF at any time, in any capacity. Operations procedures in place. GOES products- GOES Ingest and NOAAPORT Interface (GINI) (produces imagery for AWIPS) is in place and ready. CIP Capabilities

New Products Transitioned To Operations Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MIRS) v4.0 products : • The new products from NOAA-18 and MetOp include: Rain Rate (RR). • The new products from Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) include: Snow Water Equivalent (SWE), Sea Ice Concentration (SIC), Snow Cover Extent (SCE), vertically-integrated non-precipitating Cloud Liquid Water (CLW) over open ocean. • With the MIRS v4.0 implementation, the gridded MIRS surface and precipitation products are also available to users in HDF-EOS format.

New Products Transitioned To Operations • Blended Total Precipitable Water (TPW) Products • The blended TPW products system merges the operational available TPW products from multi-sensors, including Defense Meteorological Satellites Program (DMSP) F-13 SSM/I , NOAA-15, 16, 17,18 and MetOp-A AMSU-A over ocean, and Global Positioning System (GPS) and GOES Sounder over land areas in the Western Hemisphere, to provide a unified TPW and TPW anomaly product every hour - http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/bTPW/ • Provided in HDF-EOS, Man computer Interactive Data Access System and Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). 17

New Products Transitioned To Operations • GOES Surface and Insolation Product full disk (GSIP-fd) Product: • High spatial resolution solar radiation product. • Used in models for coral bleaching and the hydrological cycle predictions. • Improvements: • Increases spatial resolution to 1/8 x 1/8 degrees. • Expands spatial coverage of oceanic regions. • Evaluates insolation over both ocean and land. • Implements semi-automatic quality control of inputs, periodic calibration updates and quality-check of insolation output. • Provide data needed for validation and forcing of NWP surface physics. 19

  20. New Products Transition To Operations • Multifunctional Transport Satellites(MTSAT)-1R Winds: • - MTSAT-1R Winds product covers the Western Pacific and extends beyond coverage offered by operational GOES-W Winds product. • - Provided in BUFR, McIDAS MD and TEXT format. 20

Near real-time MODIS Processing System • The porting of the near real-time Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) science algorithms from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to the NSOF Linux cluster was completed per the March 31, 2009 milestone. • MODIS is now being processed completely out of ESPC at NSOF. • Improved reliability of MODIS data processing system. • Distribution server at GSFC has been upgraded for delivery of products from NSOF for GSFC and DoD customers. • The distribution testing of MODIS products from ESPC via the DAPE Gateway (formerly Shared Processing Gateway) completed. • All AQUA and TERRA MODIS data are now being delivered to AFWA via the DAPE Gateway. 21

NPOESS Data Exploitation (NDE) Status and Accomplishments

  24. System Development Successful test flow of 2 orbit proxy data from Svalbard to Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) to NPOESS Data Exploitation (NDE) Storage Area Network. Tested command, control, & communications segment (C3S) to NESDIS central interface. Systems Integration Participated in JAG/ODAA effort to develop end-to-end NPP data assimilation test plan and standard NPP proxy data sets (Refer to ODAA update for details). Verified NPP data flow requirements to primary users. Hosted Telecon with AFWA to convey lessons learned to accelerate AFWA’s NPP data exploitation effort. Completed key Interface Control Documents. NDE Status and Accomplishments

  25. No Offsite backup for National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) era Will coordinate w/ NESDIS OSDPD, OSD, and OCIO on CIP plan. Requesting funds to implement NDE CIP starting in FY12. Resume discussion with DoD Centrals. NDE Concerns

GOES/POES Consolidation • Decommissioning of World Weather Building Servers • ESPC staff initiated the decommissioning of more than 120 legacy servers residing in WWB • Due to delay in move to College Park, space and power are needed by NWS to install and test new equipment destined for new building • Decommissioning of servers due to be completed in June 2009 • GOES-E, GOES-W, MSG, MTSAT distribution servers will remain in WWB (and later built out at new facility in College Park) to service NWS and NESDIS users 33

  34. DAPE Gateway Update The DAPE Gateway upgrade is schedule to be completed early June. New Gateway will provide more horsepower for transfers. Current Gateway has 4 GB of memory & 270 GB of disk storage. New Gateway has 8 GB of memory & 700 GB of disk storage. 34
