  6. Selection of PPE should follow a risk assessment of the procedure to be performed • Consider: • The risk of contamination of the Healthcare Worker’s clothing and skin. • The risk of transmission to the patient.

  7. GlovesTo Wear Or Not To Wear • Inappropriate glove use increases the risk of contact dermatitis.

  8. Scenarios • Risk assess the following scenarios and discuss what PPE is necessary for the procedure. • What reasons support your choice of PPE?

  9. Scenario 1 • Betty is being nursed in a side room because she has an ESBL in her urine. She also has a urinary catheter in place. • You are going into the side room to empty Betty’s catheter bag. What precautions should you follow and why?

  10. Scenario 2 • Paul is being nursed in a six bedded bay. You are not aware of any infection prevention and control alerts for him. • What personal protective equipment, if any, do you need when changing Paul’s bedding and why?

  11. Scenario 3 • John is being nursed in a side room because he has a C Difficile infection. • John’s wife has come to visit him. What personal protective equipment should she wear before entering the room and why?

  12. Scenario 4 • Mary is a known GRE carrier and is being nursed in a side room in accordance with hospital policy. • What personal protective equipment should you be using when taking Mary’s lunch to her and why?

  13. Scenario 5 • One of the bays on your ward has been closed due to a suspected Norovirus outbreak. • A patient needs to be seen by a visiting doctor. What PPE should be worn by the doctor before entering the bay and why?

  15. All communal patient equipment must be cleaned between every patient use e.g. BP cuffs, hoists, commodes etc. • Appropriate PPE. • Appropriate cleaning product. • Refer to Decontamination Policy.
