  2. “The most dangerous place in the world”: India and Pakistan • There are few places in the world where the destruction of nuclear warfare is a real possibility. • Pakistan is one of them.

  3. Earthquakes add to the danger • The country is naturally mountainous, isolated, prone to earthquakes. • Here, a mountain of earthquake relief that Nestlé sent in 2003-4

  4. Aid to the poor continues • The poor will always be with us, and suffer especially in natural disasters. • Nestlé continues to supply food aid for poor children.

  5. But Partnerships are sustainable • In Scripture, Charity never fails. • But in the corporate world, charity doesn’t take us very far. • In Nestlé’s partnerships, there is every reason for the corporation, under any new leadership, to continue working with the farmers in whom they invested. • Both sides win, and situations of conflict caused by economic uncertainty can be resolved.

  6. Help through Partnership • Nestle started a dairy operation in the Punjab, giving the farmers a consistent, reliable way to make a living. • In a genuine innovation, it trained women as agricultural extension workers.

  7. Sustainable Technology • A new village well can save lives by providing clean water, • And thousands of hours of labor a week, which fell mostly to the women, carrying water.

  8. Nestlé and the Colombia farmers

  9. From the ravages of civil war … • Colombia has been racked by conflict for many years. • Rebel armies fought government soldiers; there were atrocities on both sides. • When a truce prevailed, the next question was, how shall we employ the demobilized militias—so this doesn’t happen again?

  10. … to Sustainable Agriculture • The militia veterans had to be given good work. • Farming was what they knew. • Usual crop: coca. • Nestlé’s idea: dairy farming. • Caqueta as model.

Partnership for peace • Nestlé set the farmers up in business. • Now the farmers have a good living, • And Nestlé buys abundant high quality milk, • And the nation has peace. • This is a true partnership, not charity. My testimony is one of gratitude and an invitation to motivate and encourage the involvement of families in (milk) farming; with all the additional security, development and well-being that job creation brings with it". What is Sustainable Agriculture? • Agriculture is sustainable if its outputs are greater than its inputs, in economic and ecological terms: • It must make a living for those who live on it; • It must not damage or degrade the natural capital of the region; • It must not abuse or degrade the people who live on its product.

  13. The Triple Bottom Line • To be sustainable, agriculture must be ethically defensible, economically viable, and environmentally invisible—leaving no permanent footprint on the earth. • This idea was pioneered (in this form) by John Elkington, in Cannibals with Forks.

  14. Across the Ocean to Nigeria

  15. Helping Nigerian farmers • Sometimes all it takes is some simple machine, • Like this small thresher, to be used with many crops, • Saving hours of backbreaking labor.

Nigeria is not a “poor” country • It has enormous wealth in the form of oil; • It has a small but plucky middle class; • And it has a history of terrible conflict, wars among the tribes for historic reasons (ancient hatreds) and for economic reasons (competition for the oil wealth). • Is there anything that the developed nations—or private parties in the developed nations—can do to help Nigeria live in peace?

"The Academy" and "The Station" • The story of just such an effort. • Partnership with Search for Common Ground, an NGO working for peace. • Reality TV where cross section of society addresses conflict situations on screen • Shared value for Nestlé (brand awareness/penetration) • ...and Society (positive role modeling) • Recognized two years running by Clinton Global Initiative
