Histoire : De l’empire à la décolonisation 1600 Catholicmissionaries arrive in whatwillbecomeFrench Indochina. 1635 French colonizationbegins in Guadeloupe. 1656 Three thousand African slaves make up one-fifth of the population in Guadeloupe. Louis XIV invests in the cultivation of sugar cane in the Antilles. 1659 France establishes Senegal’s first capital city, Saint- Louis, a major trading outpost for gold, ivory, gum arabic, and slaves.

  8. Histoire : De l’empire à la décolonisation 1794 Chaos reigns in revolutionary France. Other European countries seize the opportunity to attack France, both on the continent and in the Caribbean. The ruler of Algiers, now the capital of Algeria,supplies famished France with wheat in a gesture of solidarity and friendship. The French National Convention abolishes slavery. 1803 Overextended by slave revolts in Haiti and impending war with Britain, France sells a large share of land for 3¢ an acre. The Louisiana purchase destroys Napoleon Bonaparte’s dreams of building a North American empire.

Histoire : De l’empire à la décolonisation 1830 France conquers Algeria using military force. 1896 France conquers the rest of what will become French Indochina. 1898 Rubber trees are planted in Indochina, and in a few years, the invention of the bicycle and the automobile make the rubber industry boom. 1945 Africans have fought for France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), the Great War (1914-1919) and the Second World War (1939-1945), even though movements are already underway to gain independence from France. (Watch the trailer for La Batailled’Alger) 1959-1960 Senegal and French Sudan (Mali) join to form the Mali Federation, which peacefully gains independence from France in 1960 through the signing of an agreement to the transfer of powers. 2010 Guadeloupe votes in a referendum in favor of administrative simplification rather than autonomy. It exists as an overseas département of France, as well as an overseas région.

From DOM-TOM toDROM-POM-COM DOM-TOM Départements, territoires d’outre-mer DROM Département et région d’outre-mer (5) POM Pays d’outre-mer (La Polynésie Française) COM Collectivité d’outre-mer (5) New Caledonia(La Nouvelle Calédonie) will vote in a referendum to decide whether or not to become a POM in 2014 or later. It is currently a sui generis collectivity.
