  2. Economy • The economy is dependant on agriculture and livestock. • Tajikistan’s lowlands specialize in the cultivication of cotton, wheat, barley, fruit, vegetables, dairy, cattle, goat and yaks.

  3. Geography • Ninety-three percent of Tajikistan’s territory is mountainous. • Tajikistan is slightly larger than the state of Illinois. • Tajikistan is the smallest country of Central Asia. • The area is 143 thousand sq miles. • The population is 7 million.

  4. Culture • People in Tajikistan dress dress modestly. • You must ask people for permission if you wish to take a picture of them. • The people respect the values of bread.

  5. Government • Tajikistan’s government is a republic. • The president of Tajikistan is Emomalii Rahmon. • Tajikistan is an emerging democracy with a directly elected president and an independent elected parliament.

  6. Ethnic groups • Tajikistan’s main ethnic group are the Tajiks. • The ethnic groups were either nomadic or sedentary. • Historically , Tajikistan was home to the Bukharian Jews.

  7. Education • The education system is national. • In the core years of school children must go through four years of primary school and two years of secondary school. • The official literacy rate is 98 percent.

  8. Language • The language of Tajikistan is Tajik. • The language has diverged from Persians that have spoken in Afghanistan and Iran. • Tajik also retains numerous archaic elements in its vocabulary,

  9. History • Tajikistan was made up from the Samanid Empire. • Tajikistan came into Russian rule in the 1860’s. • Tajikistan gained independence in 1991 and had experienced three changes in government and a civil war.
