15. Review • We’re going to quickly review last Shabbat’s teaching showing the evidence that the New testament was written in Hebrew and not Greek.

16. Greek Vs. Hebrew • Then I’ll show the last of the evidence I have on that and then we’ll look at the evidence that it wasn’t written in Aramaic either.

17. Greek Vs. Hebrew • Why is it important in the first place? • It’s important because the language of Yeshua and the Brit Hadasha helps us to understand the Jewish culture of His time. • much of a culture is wrapped up in its language and you can’t separate the two.

18. Greek Vs. Hebrew • It’s important because it is the language in which the Almighty spoke forth the Torah to Moses • and it is also the language in which the prophets expressed their revelations.

20. Greek Vs. Hebrew • One of the most beneficial reasons to knowing that Hebrew is the language of the New Testament is… it gets us out of the Greek mindset and into the Hebraic mindset.

21. Greek Vs. Hebrew • Not only that, once we know that it was written in Hebrew we can then pursue to root out one of the most ancient anti-Semitic doctrines within Christianity… • That doctrine is the removal of anything Jewish from the Bible.

22. Greek Vs. Hebrew • What a better way to take the Jewishness out of the Gospel then to remove from it the very language of the Jewish People? • I’ll tell you this from experience and many Jewish Believers feel the same way…

23. Greek Vs. Hebrew • The reason many Christian theologians hold on to the belief that it was written in Greek so defensively is because they are anti-Semitic in nature. • If you talk with them it becomes clear that their theology is anti-Jewish as a whole.

25. Greek Vs. Hebrew 1. First, we have a book of Mathew originally written in Hebrew (DuTillet and Munster) that predates anything we have in Koine Greek. (Irenaeus, Origen, Eusebius and St Epiphanius all agree and testify to this!)

26. Greek Vs. Hebrew 2. Josephus, who lived during that time, says no one in Jerusalem even spoke Greek and that he himself wasn’t even proficient in that language.

27. Greek Vs. Hebrew 3. The Jews hated Hellenism and despised the Greek language even saying, “That it is better for a man to give his child meat of swine than to teach him the language of the Greek's.”

28. Greek Vs. Hebrew They even went so far as to forbid the teaching of Greek. So why would Yehova inspire the Jews to write His Son’s biography of the greatest life ever lived, and the greatest event since Creation, in a pagan language?

29. Greek Vs. Hebrew 4. We read in the book of Maccabees that Mattias Maccabeus even went and killed any Jews who had even begun to embrace anything Greek.

32. Greek Vs. Hebrew • In Eastern Europe, there are people who for three to four hundred years have lived under Russian rule, but their languages remain intact to this day.

33. Greek Vs. Hebrew We even see evidences in the Scripture itself that Hebrew was in use.

34. Greek Vs. Hebrew 7. Yeshua spoke to Shaul… in Hebrew. Could’ve spoken to him in Greek. But He didn’t!

35. Greek Vs. Hebrew 8. We also see Hebrew written above the cross in John 19. 9. We also see in Acts 2:3-13 that the men of Rome were amazed that they were speaking in Greek!

36. Greek Vs. Hebrew 10. Every Jew knows that Hebrew is the Holy Language Not Greek and not Aramaic. If they were going to write about the Son of the Living G-d, they’d write in the Holy Language and not in the language of the Pagans. In fact, they saw the Greek language as an abomination!

37. Greek Vs. Hebrew 11. And guess what… 80% of the Dead Sea Scrolls were written in HEBREW NOT ARAMAIC OR GREEK

38. Greek Vs. Hebrew • 12. The Jews of the Diaspora spoke Hebrew. Even the critics will admit that it was used in the liturgy. If someone in the synagogue could read the liturgy, they could translate a letter too.

39. Greek Vs. Hebrew • Even today during a Bar Mitzvah the child reads Hebrew. • Hebrew has always been and will always be an integral part of Judaism.

40. Greek Vs. Hebrew 13. We also have the “Vav Connector”. • This is one of the most compelling evidences of all.

41. Greek Vs. Hebrew • It is bad grammar to start a sentence with the word AND in Greek, but it is not bad grammar to do so in HEBREW! And

42. Greek Vs. Hebrew 14. Dr. Robert Lindsey translated the book of Mark from Greek into Hebrew. • He discovered something rather interesting when he did this…

43. Greek Vs. Hebrew 15 A. He found that when he read the translation in Hebrew rather then from Greek, it made more sense. 15 B. He also discovered that it flowed better. It wasn’t disjointed like it is in the Greek.

44. Greek Vs. Hebrew 15 C. Not only that, many passages had more meaning to the Hebrew ear.

45. Greek Vs. Hebrew • That’s what we covered last week. Let’s look at even more evidence.

46. Greek Vs. Hebrew • A common argument that the Brit Hadasha was written in Greek is this… • “Well, the texts that we have are in Greek, so they must have been written in Greek originally.”

47. Greek Vs. Hebrew • The fact that the New Testament texts we have are in Greek, makes them no more original "Greek documents" than the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament, which was translated into Greek approx. 356-323 BC.)

48. Greek Vs. Hebrew • “Well, the texts that we have are in Greek, so they must have been written in Greek originally.” • That’s not a good argument at all. • Just because that’s what we have doesn’t make them the originals. It only means that’s what has survived.

49. Greek Vs. Hebrew • We also have archeological evidence that Hebrew was the language of the day. 16. Biblical Archeological Review wrote an article about a dig where they found a woman’s personal diary from the First Century. Guess what it was written in?

50. Greek Vs. Hebrew 17. Coins were also found that were minted during the time of the Bar Kokhba revolt. Not a word of Greek or Aramaic on them!
