  1. -----------------Needs for research and systematic observation in Africa Bonn,3 June 2010-----------------Birama DIARRA, Chief Division Research and Development DNM_Mali

  2. 1-Gaps for research and systematic observation ● Lack of collect data network and insufficiency of data available ● Insufficiency and high cost of equipment ● Lackof study forintensity and frequency of extreme events (floods, drought, rainfall etc..) ●Seasonal forecast outputs are only expressed on percentage ●Lack of local forecast ● Absence of downscaling model ●Insufficiency of experts 2

  3. 2_Needs for apply in agricultural climate variability and change Taking into account weather information and climate change in the technological package of research in order to reduce climate risks on the production and to increase crops yields: Planification of the agricultural activities. Adapted Crops cycle Period of onset of the rainy season Period of  end of the rainy season. Dates for ploughing, seeding   Frequency of dry period in order the rainy season Period of appearance of crops diseases 3

  4. 3-Needs research and priority actions (1) •Strengthen the networkto collect scientificappropriate data • Building capacity of experts and facilitate to access a satellite data. •  Improve localisation daily weather forecasts( District level, village level etc..). •Building capacity to elaborate a weekly forecasts. •Improved the seasonal forecast because the currently outputs are only expressed in percentage. • Development downscaling methods to improve climate change scenarios at country level in Africa. •Study the intensity and frequency of extreme events (floods, drought, rainfall etc..).

  5. Needs research and priorityactions (2) • Facilitate exchanges of experiences. •Build the capacity of the existing regional research centers in Africa ( ex ACMAD, Agrhymet, DRMC,OSSetc..). • Encourage and promote the training of young scientists. • Strengthen the linkages with existing research organizations and institutions •  Intensify the apply of GCOS activities. •Strengthen the support of finance research on developing countries. •Enhance the capacity building of GIS • Enhance the estimation of agricultural production before the end of the saison for early warning system • Enhance the early warning system • Implement a appropriate communication strategy on international, regional and national level • Taking into account the traditional knowledge. 5

  6. Facilitate manufacturing of some equipments in Africa • (like raingauge for farmers in Mali). 5Euro vs 200euro SIMPLIFIED LOCALLY MANUFACTURED RAINGAGE

  7. THANK YOU
