  12. Amos 2:6-16 6 Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals— 7 those who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth and turn aside the way of the afflicted; a man and his father go in to the same girl, so that my holy name is profaned; 8 they lay themselves down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined. 9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars and who was as strong as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath. 10 Also it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. 11 And I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?” declares the LORD. 12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine, and commanded the prophets, saying, ‘You shall not prophesy.’ 13 “Behold, I will press you down in your place, as a cart full of sheaves presses down. 14 Flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not retain his strength, nor shall the mighty save his life; 15 he who handles the bow shall not stand, and he who is swift of foot shall not save himself, nor shall he who rides the horse save his life; 16 and he who is stout of heart among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day,” declares the LORD. Israel’s Crimes Vs. 6-8 God’s Activity Vs. 9-11 Israel’s Response Vs. 12 God’s Punishments Vs. 13-16

  13. Amos 3:1 “Hear this word that the Lord has spoken”… Greatest Prophet Priest King who will come? Matthew 13:18-19

  14. Amos 3:1-2 “Jacob-Israel-Hebrews”. “Elected”… Freely rebelled. Higher standard. “Punishment” …not until vs. 11.

  15. Vs. 3-6 “No”. God is sovereign. “Positive Preachers”. The good, the bad, and the ugly? Will we only serve Him… if He “serves” us?

  16. Vs. 7-8 Revelatory God. Mark 4:21-23 21 And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

  17. Revealing to you?

  18. Vs. 9-10 God will call the nations… How embarrassing…. Amos exposing them… Oppression. Violence. Robbery. Would you rather be the prophet Amos… or Jonah?

  19. Vs. 9-10 In the last 5 years… what did you do… to help…

  20. Vs. 9-10 Lazy “Orthodox” Evangelicals… Relaxing “ALL” the time on the porch?

  21. Vs. 9-10 Lazy “Orthodox” Evangelicals… Relaxing “ALL” the time on the porch? Let’s be active…. “Orthopraxis” Orthodox Evangelicals.

  23. Vs. 13-15 Altars of Bethel… Summer/Winter homes. You have multiple homes…

  24. Vs. 13-15 Are you doing your part? Tithes? Offerings? Gifts? Sacrifices? Jesus said you shouldn’t neglect the latter but also do the first. Matthews 23:2323 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.”

  25. Amos 4:1-3 Bashan cows bred and grazed. Un-politically correct.   Oppressing & crushing. You don’t delight and want the things the Lord wants… Where your treasure is… there your heart is. Matt. 6:21

  26. Vs. 4-5 Bethel / Gilgal worship. Sarcastic Exaggeration. “Publish them”.

  27. Matthew 6:1-4 1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  28. Luke 21:1-3 1 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
