  6. WHY 3 STEP DROP? • Blitz and 8 Man Front Beater • Throws on rhythm; does not require strong arm QB • Allows the ability to isolate your best player in space • Simple checks at LOS to get in the best play • Simple protection schemes cuts practice time

Off-Season Development • VARSITY QB’S: • January and February; 3 mornings a week fundamentals • 3 QB’s work footwork and mechanics only • April and May; meeting 3 morning per week with set curriculum and progression. Emphasis on 3 step game • July; 7 passing league nights • JV QB’S: • February; 2 mornings a week of fundamentals • April and May; meet 2 mornings per week • July; 4 passing league nights

  8. Off-Season Development • Freshmen and Middle School QB’s: • Meet for 6 sessions in March • Emphasis on fundamentals • 3rd-6th Grade: • Summer Camp: Every camper learns drop technique and basic 3 step routes • Flag football program • No Contact football at this level

In-Season Development • All Levels Fundamentals Work • Tuesday during season / 15 minute session • QB Meetings • Wednesday: Pizza and video in PM • Specialties Period / Pre-Practice • Mondays devoted to varsity QB fundamentals • Pre-Game Meeting • Review situations and openers on field before warmups

  10. Concepts • 2 x 2 Formations: • Mirrored Routes • Pre-Snap: QB splits field in half • Post-Snap: QB reads designated defender • The Throw: Has 2 receivers or run… • Example: • Slant / Arrow to both sides • QB reads flat defender

Concepts • Wing Formations: • Defined by a TE and Wing • No matter the route called the TE and Wing run a stick-arrow combination • 2 receivers to call side run the route that is called • QB splits field in half • When in doubt go to stick-arrow side • Example: • Slant-Arrow to one side / Stick-Arrow to call side • QB reads flat defender

Concepts • 3 X 1 Formations: • 3 receivers to one side with 1 lone receiver to the back side • 3 receiver side runs the routes that are called • 1 receiver side will run the primary route • QB can change the route with the 1 receiver • QB will look for a 1on1 match-up to the 1 receiver side • Example: • Slant-Arrow to 3 side / hitch check to 1 side • QB reads flat defender

  21. QB Fundamentals • Under Center • “Big, Little, Little” in our 3 steps • “Roll” Step to right • “Kick” Step to left • Gun • “Catch, Pivot, Throw” • Feet at 5 yards from tip of ball • Routes do not change…

  22. QB Fundamentals • Route Aiming Points: • Fade: 2x2 box on outside shoulder • Can throw back shoulder throw • Gilman net used for development’ • Hitch: Outside number • Slant: Back Hip / Front hip vs. man • Stick: Facemask / Read outside defender • Arrow: Front hip with velocity

WR Fundamentals • All skilled players learn routes, stance, release • Outside foot back • All routes based on steps / not yards • Based on formation we have the ability to make any player the #1 or #2 receiver in the route • #1 receiver runs the route that is called… • #2 runs the compliment • If #3 in formation…runs a built in route with the call

DRILLS • QB Routine • 3 step drop used in warm-up • Use a yard-line or gym line for the midline to gauge first step in drop • Noose Drill • Warm-up drill with receivers and QB • 2 cones 8 yards apart / catch and get vertical • QB throw away from defender • Force QB to throw to spot correlated to a route

PROTECTIONS • “MAX“ Protection: 84-85 • Offensive Line: • Power Step with inside foot • Block first man “On-Inside” • C: Double the A gap player • Most used in goal line situations • TE or SLOT stays in with same technique opposite the RB • RB: • Aiming point is inside leg of TE or SLOT • “GUN” align to the call side
