  1. Facet #3 Application Mel – Elementary school science R.Webb - Middle school science B. DeCicco High school science

  2. Application Definition: Using the knowledge and skills learned to solve a real world problem. “…the sooner students are given the opportunities to make make synthesis on their own, the sooner they will feel that the world of school has something to contribute to them…” (Bloom p 266, UbD p 93)

  3. Assessing Application “Application of understanding is thus a context-dependent skill, requiring the use of new problems and diverse situations in assessment.” (UbD, pg 93) This means creating opportunities for students to apply the skills and knowledge to a novel situation in order to demonstrate that they are not recall memorized facts, but are creating a solution to the presented problem.

  4. Facet 3-Application Kinematics in Elementary School • Explore fundamental concepts in grades 1-3 • Counterbalance, Weight and Stability • These concepts set the stage for force and motion experiments in middle school and kinematics in junior high/high school.

  5. Kinematics Instruction and Assessment in Elementary School

  6. Application of Measurement in 8th Grade Science • Standard: • 8.1.8. Read analog and digital meters on instruments used to make direct measurements of length, volume, weight, elapsed time, rates, or temperatures, and choose appropriate units. Explain how to interpolate on analog scales.

  7. Application of Measurementin 8th Grade Science • Students will first learn in class what instrument is used to measure mass. • Students will have to apply knowledge of how to properly measure the mass of an object.

  8. Using a balance • Students have to determine how far to move a particular rider to get exact measurements. • Move the large rider to the right until it is one notch too much than move it back. • Next, Do the same with the middle rider • Then fine adjust by moving the small rider to the left slowly and carefully.

  9. Add the riders • Find the measurement of the object: • What is the position of the largest rider? ___________________ • What is the position of the middle rider? ___________________ • What is the position of the smallest rider? _________________ • What is the total mass of the object? ________________________

  10. Application Exam questions • Measure the mass of the mystery object (lab practicum): (4 points) • Measure the length of the mystery object (lab practicum): (3 points) Students must understand how to use a balance, make sure the measurements are correct and calculate the mass. Students must understand what side of a ruler to use and how to measure the length of the object while sing correct units.

  11. Application in High School Physics Use your knowledge of physics to drop a water balloon on Mr. De Cicco as he bikes home from school.

  12. This project was a set up for the summative assessment….

  13. High School Physics Application Exam Question #1

  14. High School Physics Application Exam Question #2 Both of these questions present students with novel, never before seen problems, to which they must apply their knowledge & skill to solve.

  15. NOT Application Questions Neither of these questions are application questions because they are not novel and they do not require the student apply knowledge and skills to a new problem, they are merely recall of memorized information.
