  1. Round 1 ZeenaFrome has been affected negatively by her past emotionally, morally, and physically which affects her ability to hold healthy relationships with Ethan and Mattie. The tension from the unhealthy relationships caused by Zeena add to the work as a whole by driving Ethan away from her and isolating Mattie as an outsider from the Frome household. Round 2 ZeenaFrome has been affected negatively from her past experiences that she has had, which developed her into a spiteful character. This greatly adds to the work as a whole; she causes tension and grief by encouraging her unhealthy relationships between Mattie and Ethan, which leads to the conflicts throughout the whole story. Round 3 Zeena's negative past experiences cause her to become spiteful and encourage her unhealthy relationship between Mattie and Ethan.

  2. Round 4 Zeena's life of growing up sickly and sheltered has caused her to become a spiteful person, which encourages the already unhealthy relationship between she and Ethan. Ethan is then driven to Mattie, who he has a healthy relationship, which cause the conflicts throughout the novel. Round 5 Zeena’s life of sickness carries over to her unhealthy relationship with Ethan showing that personal freedom is needed before a healthy relationship with another. Round 6 Zeena’s life of perpetual sickness limits her ability to establish a healthy relationship as personal fulfillment needs to be attained before connecting with others.

  3. Round 1 • Because of Ethan's inability to control his fate in past events, such as his parents death, he experiences a power struggle with Zeena throughout the novel. This power struggle is important to the meaning of the work as a whole because it relates to the overall theme that you can't control fate; if something was meant to be, you can't change it. Round 2 • Because of Ethan’s inability to control things like his parents’ deaths, he experiences a power struggle with Zeena. This power struggle relates to the overall theme that you can’t control fate; if something was meant to be, you can’t change it. Round 3 • Ethan’s inability to move beyond the deaths of his parents creates a power struggle with Zeena for the Frome household. This power struggle displays that idea that if something was meant to be, you can’t change it.

  4. Round 4 • Ethan’s assumed responsibility after his parents’ deaths creates a power struggle with Zeena, which shows that one must concede some power in order to make a relationship work. Round 5 • Although Ethan assumes absolute responsibility over the Frome household after the deaths of his parents, the resulting power struggle with Zeena makes him realize that he must make concessions for a successful relationship.
