National Broadband Plan • March 16, 2010 – The FCC sends the National Broadband Plan to Congress • Recommendation 16.16: The FCC should launch a comprehensive next-generation alert system inquiry. • “The system should alert the public of emergencies through all possible means of communications. In the event of a tornado, for example, alerts would be broadcast on local media outlets, sent to wireless and wireline phones within the affected area, posted on Internet feeds and websites sites, and issued through any other communication outlet serving the affected area. That would ensure the public is informed of an emergency and has the information it needs to protect itself. The FCC’s inquiry should focus primarily on how to develop such a system.”
