  3. Canada’s Food Guide • Balance between the 4 categories in Canada’s Food Guide • Grains, Meat & Alternatives, Dairy (Milk) & Alternatives and Fruits & Vegetables • ½ plate of Vegetables, ¼ grain & ¼ meat

  4. Variety • Rotate through a variety of choices, when meal planning • Endive, Spinach, Arugala or Leaf Lettuce • Select products in season

  5. Texture • There should be a variety of textures on your plate • Soft mashed potatoes with crispy green beans and juicy pork tenderloin

  6. Colour • Try to make sure you are incorporating a variety of colours within the meal • You should aim to “Eat the Rainbow”

  7. Temperature • A meal plays out well if there is a variation in temperature • A cool salad with hot spaghetti, and warm garlic bread

  8. Use What’s on Hand • Check your pantry • What do you often keep stocked at all times at home? • These are staples

  9. Consider the Budget • What does your family normally spend on a meal? • How many members are there in your family?

  10. Shop the Flyer • Check flyers weekly and pick out several main meal components around which to plan your meals • Stock up when something goes on sale, freezing it for a later date
