MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – RURAL HONDURAS STATISTICS • Average level of education is approximately 5th grade • Typically no doctors in a 20 mile radius • 80% of the population has no access to a dentist • 70% have no access to public sanitary services • Typical families have less than3 gallons of water per day to use • Limited to no access to financial services BELIZE GUATEMALA HONDURAS EL SALVADOR NICARAGUA COSTA RICA PANAMA

  15. MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – WHAT IS MEDICAL BRIGADES? MEDICAL BRIGADES • Provides communities with access to doctors and medicine at least twice a year • Through 7 day brigades, community members receive doctor consultations, gynecology clinics, medicine, and health education workshops • Community Health Workers are trained in selectedcommunities to help provide follow-up care and refer medical emergencies between brigades • Patient referrals

MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – PROJECT SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNITY SELECTION • Based on - Need - Access to medical care - Community commitment SUSTAINABILITY ASPECTS • Establish Community Health Workers (CHWs) - Local community members • Patient Referral Program • - Donors fund medical care that falls outside scope of brigades • In country staff - Lead your Brigade - Train CHWs and follow up with communities after brigades - Select future communities to work with • - Plan and prepare in-country logistics before arrival

  20. WHAT DOES A BRIGADE LOOK LIKE?

MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – ITINERARY ONE-WEEK MEDICAL BRIGADE COMPONENTS • Volunteers work with licensed health care professionals • Brigades visit communities over 3 consecutive days • Volunteers & health professionals use Open MRS data software to track patient information and care • Volunteers help run each of the following stations: - Intake - Triage - Doctor consultation and gynecology station - Dental consultation - Prescription drop-off - Healthcare education workshops - Prescription pick-up and directions

  22. MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS IN-TAKE STATION Volunteers record the following information from each patient using the Open MRS system: • Name, Age, Gender • Community Residence & Date of Visit

  23. MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS TRIAGE STATION Below are some of the items volunteers may record for each patient: • Vitals & Chief complaints • Blood pressure • Allergies & Family History

  24. MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS CONSULTATION STATION • Doctors diagnose & prescribe medication to patients • Students shadow and ask questionsthroughout consultation • Every Brigade now has a gynecology station for pap smears (female students may observe)

  25. MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS DENTAL STATION • Dentists perform tooth extractions, cleanings, and occasional cleanings • Students shadow and ask questions and help sterilize instruments • Students lead children's dental hygiene charla and provide fluoride treatments

  26. MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS EDUCATION STATION • While Prescriptions are filled, patients receive public health education - Dental Care - Understanding Personal Health - Preventative Care • Student volunteers run children's charla, community members run adult charla

  27. MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS PRESCRIPTION PICK-UP STATION • Patients pick up prescriptions, volunteers provide the following instructions - Types of Medications - Dosage Amounts - Directions for Medication Usage

MEDICAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – TOTAL CONTRIBUTION HOW IS YOUR MEDICAL BRIGADE FUNDED? • Volunteers’ Program Contribution: - $780 (Honduras) - Brigade expenses - Program sustainability - Airfare: Variable PROGRAM CONTRIBUTION DETAILS • 7 day program • Accommodations & meals (vegetarian options available) • Clean drinking water • Airport pick-up and drop-off • In-country transportation • Spanish translators and coordinators, and security • Program sustainability and follow-up between brigades
