How and when was the outlet established, who were their key figures? • Founded by: EdwyPlenel, François Bonnet, Gérard Desportes and Laurent Mauduit. • 2007: A view for a news outlet, internet -based, and independent financially and ideologically. • 2008: Launched the website. • Economic model: paid subscriptions must guarantee the independence of its journalists' work. • “Mediapart is a journal of journalists whose capital is controlled by its founding team” President and editor: EdwyPlenel

How it’s funded. • Simplified Joint Stock Company • Initial capital, consisting of personal contributions from the founding members, reaches a total amount of 1,325,000 euros. • Two investor partners and independent entrepreneurs in the IT sector paid 500,000 euros each. • The Friends of Mediapart Society, sums ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 euros. • On the day of the launch of the newspaper, the sums collected were  therefore 2,939,000 euros. • The capital distribution: 60% for founders, 40% for investors and friends. • The paying readership it now the only source of income, last year, Mediapart had approximately 12 million euros of turnover.

What are its most notable investigations? • Bettencourt Case- June 2010 • In June 2010, Mediapart revealed the existence and content of clandestine recordings from 2009 and 2010 at Liliane Bettencourt's home by her butler, showing relationships hitherto unknown between her and Éric Woerth (then Labour minister), President Nicolas Sarkozy and other ministers, triggering the Woerth-Bettencourt case. • Bettencourt is accused of tax evasion and of having 30 million euros in tax rebate with Woerth was budget minister (while campaigning against tax evasion). • Few months later President Sarkozy and Woerth were also accused of abusing old Bettencourrt’s weakness to regularly get money from her; Woerth would have gotten 150 00 euros in cash for the presidential campaign of Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007.

What are its most notable investigations? • The Kadhafi case - APRIL 28, 2012 • Media reveal that they are in possession of two documents suggesting the existence of a payment of 50 million euros by the Libyan regime to finance the presidential campaign of Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007. • One of the documents published is an agreement, all in Arabic, "on the amount and methods of payment" • President Nicolas Sarkozy announced Monday (April 30th) that he will prosecute against the newspaper "Mediapart" for publishing the news that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi contributed to fund his campaign in 2007. • November 2015, an expert authenticates the document which mentions a donation of 50 million euros of Khadafi for the campaign of Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007 and six months later, the court issued a dismissal order to the benefit of Mediapart. How are its investigations published? • mainly written articles but it is possible to find all types of contents online, for example • video documentaries, podcasts, debates recorded in their own studios. • Investigations are always based on documents and published as a written articles, • the documents in questions are always verified and in some cases disclosed with • the article

  10. How big is the outlet today? 2006 2017 EdwyPlenel, François Bonnet, Laurent Mauduit, Gérard Desportes 74 employees, 52 of them are journalists The investigative team has always been composed by 4 journalists.

Assess the model and the strength of the journalism it produces • -the readers are willing to support what they consider good journalism. • -Aims to be completely funded through paid subscriptions in order to maintain its editorial • independence. • Mediapart is not a website • -The founders insist, that Mediapart is an online newspaper focused on investigative journalism.  • -Aims to cover the current events from a different angle, using sources that do not usually appear in the • traditional media. • -Publishing online provides journalists unlimited space, allowing the story to dictate the length and format of • the piece, and provides opportunities to embed hyperlinks and interact with their readers. • Only our readers can buy us
