FIFA The Fédération Internationale de Football Association • Established on May 21, 1904. • Seven countries met in Paris, France to establish the federation. • France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden & Switzerland • Is the global governing body for football association. • Responsible for organizing international tournaments, most famously the World Cup.

World Cup • Developed as a result of the success of the Olympic Football Tournament. • FIFA wanted its own World Champion. • The first FIFA World Cup was July 18, 1930 in Uruguay. • France scored the first goal in World Cup history. • Final match was between Argentina and Uruguay. • 4-2 game in front of 93,000 people.

In the Beginning • France created a national team in 1904 a few months after the creation of FIFA. • France was considered a weak contender in World and European football. • National and club teams rarely won. • Renowned for having little interest in the game. • Hosted their first World Cup in 1938. • Were immediately defeated by Italy, who went on to win the Championship again Hungry.

As a Result… • This victory caused an explosive interest in football in France. • The win was a surprise to many and caused enormous national pride. • Today football players and coaches are highly sought after abroad. • Plays a unique role in French society. • The most watched sport in France. • Most popular sport.

Football is to France as Baseball is to America. • As they do in America, France has many youth leagues. • Sports are very much encouraged in school. • Local sports receive financial support from the local government. • Many of the children in France idolize the members of the French National Team.

ZinedineZidane • One of the most regarded players in France. • Named the best football player of the past 50 years by the UEFA Golden Jubilee Poll. • Named Most Outstanding Player in 2006 World Cup. • Famously known for a specific incident that took place during the World Cup in 2006.
