About DNS • Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses • DNS system is a database which spread an own network • layer 5 – session layer • uses UDP or TCP • when using a domain name DNS translates the name into the IP address • large amount of requests causes many difficulties

  4. IP Addresses • Every machine on Internet has its own IP address • server has a static IP address • home machines using a modem have an IP address being assigned by the ISP • IP address is important to talk to a server

  5. Domain Names • Alias names for IP addresses • Several domain levels • Name in one (COM) must be unique • DN distribution by DNIC.de or Nic.com… • Every domain has a domain name server
