LMU function in action: Logistics Data Management in Zambia ZAMBIA’S LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT UNIT • Receives, reviews, and processes reports and orders from facilities for antiretroviral drugs, HIV tests, PMTCT commodities, laboratory commodities, and essential medicines • Generates feedback reports for each facility that highlight reporting errors and stock levels • Tracks non-reporting facilities and follow-up immediately to obtain reports • Shares reporting data with MOH and key partners

LMU function in action: Quantification in Zimbabwe ZIMBABWE’S LOGISTICS UNIT • Manages central level automated information system used for aggregating and analyzing reported logistics data  used as primary source of data for quantification • Leads the annual quantification exercise and is responsible for updating the quantification and procurement plan quarterly • Manages supply plans and coordinates arrivals for all sources of commodities, identifies gaps and mobilizes resources to ensure continuous supply

LMU function in action: Training & Capacity Building in Zimbabwe ZIMBABWE’S LOGISTICS UNIT • Ensures facility staff have supply chain skills, knowledge, and tools necessary for logistics system functioning • Pre-service training • In-service training • On the job training • Trains supervisors in supporting facility staff, and provides direct routine supportive supervision • Coordinates all supply chain training activities across partners

Starting up an LMU • Critical components: • Identify an LMU “champion” • Define LMU functions • Identify supply chain systems to be managed • Outline the relationship between central medical store, MOH, and LMU • Determine LMU structure, staffing, & location • Estimate fixed & recurring operating costs • Countries in LMU start-up process: Tanzania, Botswana & Ghana
