Science activities should give children opportunities to: • Observe • Note differences and likenesses • Solve problems • Collect specimens • Develop interests and abilities • Estimate • Measure • Sort • Classify • Predict (hold your thoughts) • Listen to sounds • Look at books • View videos • Collect pictures

  3. Science Area • Science table, with a focus, covered by materials selected by teacher • Children should be encouraged to add to the table, unplanned hidden agenda • Collections cheap, • Resource materials • Concept related literature • Picture p 357

Process skills to promote • Observe with 5 senses; feel, hear, see ,smell, taste • Draw conclusions about observations based on past experiences • Classify objects into sets using multiple properties • Compare sets of objects by measuring and counting • Communicate by describing objects , relationships and occurrences Use open-ended questions instead of closed(one word answer)

Color: to match, group,mix and observe, compare “lighter than” • Water: flows, dissolves, many forms, float, sink, absorb, held, evaporates • Foods: process and product-baking bread, reading, math, watch how foods change when cooked differently ie. Rice • Body: physical change photos, measure and growth charts • Gardening: seeds party on science table, observe growth • Air: takes space, wind moves, weather • Magnets: pull some not others-iron, big and small • Wheels: round, roll, do work for humans, axis rotation • Field trips: short walks with focus (bring in materials) • Pets: teach empathy, responsibility, respect; allergies Hamsters-chubby, shiny coat, bright eyes, gnaws on wood GuineaPig-loves attention Rabbit- large wire cage lots of cleaning, snakes-need rock cave aquarium Fish-70-80degrees less care Frog-moist :toad –dry eat worms insects dog food
