Southern New England Aviation Weather Services Weather Forecast Office Taunton, MA www.weather.gov/boston Center Weather Service Unit Nashua, NH www.weather.gov/zbw “Accurate weather information is a vital element for the safe and efficient operation of the NAS.” Mission Weather Forecast Office (WFO) meteorologists provide warnings and forecasts for aviation operations and serve a variety of users, from commercial airlines to general aviation and military operators. Center Weather Service Unit (CWSU) meteorologists provide weather support and consultation to FAA air traffic managers and controllers. Rerouting of aircraft around hazardous weather is based largely on forecasts provided by CWSU meteorologists. TAF MIS Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAF) are produced for nine airports in southern New England. TAFs are issued 4 times daily at 00, 06, 12, and 18 GMT, and are updated more frequently if conditions change. Meteorological Impact Statement (MIS) is a planning forecast and discussion of weather conditions expected to impact ZBW airspace. Emphasis is on the next 12 hours with a brief synopsis of expected conditions out to 24 hours. They are issued between 8 and 9 am, 12 and 1 pm, 6 and 7 pm, and as conditions warrant. AWW CWA • Airport Weather Warnings (AWW) are issued for the safety of ground operations • at Boston’s Logan Airport and all Rhode Island State Airports. Criteria include: • Onset of Lightning (KBOS and KPVD only) • Sustained wind of at least 27 knots • Gusts of at least 40 knots • Freezing Rain and/or Sleet • Heavy Snowfall Rate (1 inch per hour or greater Center Weather Advisory (CWA) is a short term warnings of hazardous weather conditions provided to all aviation interests, including private pilots, towers, flight service stations, and commercial airlines. CWAs are issued as needed for weather hazards up to two hours in advance. Hazards may include thunderstorms, icing, clear air (high level) turbulence, low level turbulence, or low level wind shear. Aviation Forecast discussion Area Forecast Discussions (AFD) include an Aviation section which contains forecaster reasoning and uncertainties regarding expected aviation-related conditions.
