  2. 18th Amendment • Outlawed Alcohol. • Enacted Prohibition • Enforced by Volstead act

  3. Goals of Prohibition • 1. Eliminate Drunkenness • 2. Eliminate Physical abuse • 3. Eliminate prostitution, gambling, and other vices. • 4. . Eliminate absenteeism and job related accidents

  4. Organized Crime • A result of prohibition. • People still wanted alcohol, so gangs supplied it to the public through corruption, violence, and bootleggers. • Very profitable business, made organized crime very powerful.

  5. Al Capone Most infamous gangster of the 1920s. Ran his bootlegging industry out of Chicago Made millions during the prohibition era, eventually went to jail in 1931.

  6. 21st Amendment • Passed in 1933, ended prohibition. • Prohibition turned out to be more of dud than anything else.

  7. Consumerism • An era when people had the ability to buy “stuff” • People bought appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators.

  8. IMPACT OF THE AUTO Among the many changes were: • Paved roads, traffic lights • Gas stations, repair shops • Freedom for rural families • Independence for women • By 1920 80% of world’s vehicles in U.S.

  9. Coolidge Pro-Busines • kept taxes down and business profits up • Tariffs were high which Government interference in business was minimal • Wages were increasing

  10. Babe Ruth • Babe Ruth was a larger than life American hero who played for Yankees • He hit 60 homers in 1927

  11. CHARLES LINDBERGH’S • Lindbergh made the first nonstop solo trans-atlantic flight • He took off from NYC in theSpirit of St. Louisand arrived in Paris 33 hours later to a hero’s welcome

  12. THE FLAPPER • During the 1920s, a new ideal emerged for some women: the Flapper • A Flapper was an emancipated young woman who embraced the new fashions and urban attitudes

  13. Red Scare • Era when people were afraid of Communism coming to America • Fueled by Communist Revolution in Russia

  14. Nativism • Making America safe for AMERICANS • Americans were White and Protestant • Fueled by the re-rise of the KKK

  15. SACCO & VANZETTI • Italian anarchists Sacco & Vanzetti • Convicted of felonies despite flimsy evidence, their execution was symbolic of discrimination against radical beliefs

  16. Palmer Raids • Lead by Attorney General Arnold Palmer • Raided unions, businesses, and personal homes looking for communists • Often found nothing. Similar to terrorist raids in the middle east today.

  17. SCOPES TRIAL • Trial that pitted fundamentalism against evolution • Fundamentalists found all truth in the bible – including science & evolution • Evolution- theory based that species evolved from one kind to another.

  18. THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE • Cultural Explosion from African Americans in the borough of Harlem. • Saw advances in music, art, poetry, and theater. Migration of the Negro by Jacob Lawrence

  19. LANGSTON HUGHES • Poet • Many of his poems described the difficult lives of working-class blacks • Some of his poems were put to music, especially jazz and blues

  20. LOUIS ARMSTRONG • Jazz Musician • Famous trumpet player • Armstrong is considered the most important and influential musician in the history of jazz

  21. Buying on Installment Plans • AKA buying on Credit. • People would not be able to pay back banks in full. • When banks take to many bad loans, they sink. • Leads to our next Unit, The Great Depression.
